Hey there, I'm Rafael and I'm from NY. Total beginner to the speed bag and would love to get into this as much as I can.

I'm sure you have all been asked this before by a new person, but what would be the ideal equipment for a new person to this hobby? Any suggestions on what bag to get and what platform or does that depend on where I will be doing my speed bag hitting? If it does, I will be doing it in my own room in my apartment.

Apartment? I like to encourage everyone I know to take up the Speed Bag, but your neighbors may hate you. Even a solidly mounted drum makes quite a bit of noise.

This platform (http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=10284793) right here seems to be the most recommended platform around.

Bags are mostly personal preference, you'll probably want to start out with a larger bag. 9x6 or 10x7, as larger bags have larger hitting area and are generally a bit easier to control. Title bags have a really good price tag, and are highly recommended hereabouts.

Everybody else has lots more experience than me, and we are always glad to help out new Baggers. Welcome!

Hey Rafael, Welcome to the forum my friend. You certainly came to the right place. I think Reno has given you the advice you need. The Everlast Adjustable platform is an excellent piece of equipment. My pennies worth is, spend some time here reading on the different bags, how to mount a platform and reducing vibration/noise.
Purchase The Speed Bag Bible by Alan Kahn (the book and cd.) This will get you hooked in no time. Also check out The Speedbagskunk's (http://www.youtube.com/user/42047) video's

Get yourself started, make some video's and post them to Youtube and link them to here. This way you will make some fantastic progress.

I agree.

Otherwise maybe you can find a time when nobody will object. I found that solution to be very restrictive when I had a similar living arrangement. Wish I had built a freestanding unit back then. Or mounted a wall unit to the cement basement wall, which might have been quiet enough. A problem worth solving.

Besides, how loud are we talking about here? Does speed bagging really produce that much loud noise?

It's not necessarily loud, but the fact that most platforms are mounted to studs...transfers noise quite a ways.

The noise factor can also be influenced by the room acoustics. If you have highly reflective surfaces it can seem louder. I used to hit all night in my garage with the door closed and it would sound like a giant echo chamber. The neighbors could hear it plenty, ( or maybe it was the boom box when I was hitting to music), but when I started hanging up thick padded material around the door and wall it killed the sound (or at least the echo) quite a bit.

I've noticed that heavily carpeted gyms or those with absorbent flooring also tend to kill the sound a bit.

It depends on the swivel type as well.. the clank of the metal ball hook travels quite far. The metal ball hook is probably the noisiest type.
