Hello all,

I`ve just started boxing and have been given a bbe speed ball set up by a friend, however the bag seams very slow, i see on videos on ppl hitting a speed ball once and it will bounce back and forth a few times where as mine will only bounce one and a half times but very slowly... not like the dudududua more like duda if you know what i mean...

Is this down to the bag? which ball should i buy because this one seams too slow. i know i`m only a learner but this bag seams to big (think its the biggest you can buy) and slow...

the only way to make it faster is to only let it do half bounces...hope you all understand what i mean by this question...

Could anybody suggest a tried and tested speed bag that I could buy in the uk? I have had a read through the threads and everyone seams to talk about the title pro mex 8x5 bag is pro mex the make or model? as i`ve seen someone say to get this instead of a yellow one?? either way i cannot find this bag for sale in the uk and would like to know if theres an alterative supplied in the uk...

thanks for any help

novice, glad to have you on the forum. You have two experts out there with a variety of bags, UK and Fingers. They'll chime in and give you specific UK advice but others certainly will help with your various bag questions.

I'll just throw in, I also have a large 12 x 10 bag among my few smaller bags. The reason I still like also having that large bag is the power it takes to just keep it moving vs the smaller bags. But that aside, the smaller bags certainly give you more speed for the punch.

thanks for the reply, hopefully i`ll be able to find the right bag for me. I want to practice speed and coordination over power so i think i`ll be better off with the smaller bag..problem is finding one that fit`s the bill in the uk...but hopefully this forum will point me in the right direction.

thanks again

Hey novice, welcome to the forums mate. I'll try and help you.

I have a friend plus my brother who seen my video's and decided to go ahead and buy a platform and bag. Both of them purchased the BBE Speedballs. They both lost interest almost immediately. I have just given my Rival 6x9 to the friend, now he can't leave it alone.:D It makes me mad that they even bother making these bags as I have hit them and I know what your complaint is.

The UK members here use SugarRays (http://www.sugarrays.co.uk/shop/speedballs.html) they are probably the best supplier with a half decent range of bags.

If you feel confident enough, buy the Everlast 5x8 (http://www.sugarrays.co.uk/shop/everlast-professional-speed-bags.html) Small. This measures about 6x9 (medium) and is a pretty quick bag. The Rival 6x9 (http://www.sugarrays.co.uk/shop/rival-precision-speed-bags.html)is a medium bag but I found it's slow but just right for beginning with. The Pro Box Extreme (http://www.sugarrays.co.uk/shop/pro-box-xtreme_peanut-speedball.html) is 6x9 a quality bag and I would say faster than the Everlast. The FS bags (http://www.sugarrays.co.uk/shop/fighting-sports_pro-speed-bags.html), I believe are good quality bags too, I'm waiting for Sugar Rays to stock up on the 5x8's.

Apart from the Cleto Reyes XS bag, that's about all I have hit from Sugar Rays. I won't recommend that, as it's super fast and almost impossible to control when hitting from all angles.

Like I said, it will depend on your ability or confidence, the smaller the bag the quicker it will rebound.

Another thing I can tell you is, put a bag of sand on top of the platform. This will reduce vibration and things will speed up a bit.

Remember when starting out think 'Control bag', the speed will come naturally.

Just ask if you need to know anything else, we're more than happy to get you addicted to speed bagging.;)

thank you all for your answers,

ukspeedbag thank you again for your very informative answer, I think i`ll buy the everlast small bag from sugar rays, I want the fastest bag i can get to be honest, I started boxing to get fit, but now i have got the bug and want to get better and better...

I`m sure like me you have all watched the rocky films as a kid, for me the insperational training part makes my hair stand on end, no matter how many times i watch it... speed bag being the vocal point...

anyway.... hopefully once i`ve ordered and recieved the correct bag, i`ll be on my way....

thanks again for the excellent advice...

, I want the fastest bag i can get to be honest,

The Everlast 4x6 (http://www.sportsdirect.com/everlast-speed-bag-6inch-753140) is faster again, but I would start with something bigger to begin with. Nothing wrong with buying one though for when your skills improve.

Take no notice of the image Sportsdirect are using, the bag you receive is the yellow and black XS.

Did you order anything bigger too? I would advise you do, it's good to hit bags of different sizes and if you want to hit from all angles, a bigger bag is best to begin with.
Have fun! Post a video with your new bag.;)

Totally agree. Hitting different bags will make you a much better Bagger.

hi everyone i`ve got the new everlast bag through today, blown it up fitted it and to be honest it doesnt seam any faster than my big bag... i`ve watched ukspeedbags videos on youtube with the bag same as mine and it seams loads faster, think its down to my swivel being s@@t... any recommendations on which swivel to buy or have some of you made your own? i know my board is too high and i`m going to lower it but im sure thats nothing to do with the speed of the ball...

just to set my mind at ease is there anything i can do to check that everything is ok ie the swivel... I know im only learning but it just doesnt seam right some how... (its like the swivel is to long)

thanks for any help...

Have you inflated the bag properly? Does the platform vibrate? Get a sand bag on top.

Can you post a video of you hitting the bag? This would be a good starting point to helping you out. That bag you have purchased is top notch mate and there shouldn't be any problem. You'll have to get used to it, find the sweet spot. I just took delivery of my second Everlast 4x6 today. I was surprised how different it felt compared to my other. I guess once the loop has been broken in it'll be okay.

Post a video and let's see.;)

hi thanks for the reply, I havent got a camera man at the min so i have just taken a couple of pics for now off the swivel and set up to see if it looks ok?

on one of the pics i have held the bag up so you can see it there is a nut and bolt on the swivel and this sometimes hits the plate...I`m pretty sure this isn`t right but i`ll let you be the judge...

thanks again

Aren't the pitfalls of the English language wonderful?? lol...

UK, were you sandbagging him when you suggested he put a sand bag on top? C'mon... let him just use a bag of sand!

Yeah mate! Anything will do! Some people use heavy punch bags, even bags of dog food!:D The idea of using something like this is a safety thing. If whatever you use does happen to fall off and hit you on the head it won't hurt as much as let's say 'bricks'..........Ouch!:D Or in my case my platform fell off the wall and the sandbags hit me on the head!:D:D That's why I have a problem with my English!:D

Yeah, that's about right mate. Belly of the bag on line with your nose or mouth will make the bottom with your chin.

Your gym sounds good. good luck with the training.;)

I`ve finally got the bag at the right height (i think so anyway) and got the new swivle and bag fitted...had a load of problems with drilling into things and now the F`ing bricks are comming loose... anyway...i`ve made a 30 second vid...the bag still doesnt seam as good as it should be after watching other ppl`s videos but i`m thinking the board isn`t thick enough and may try and find a second hand everlast... like everyone else seams to have...

How do i put my vid on here?

thanks

Good to hear you've got it almost sorted, although you don't sound satisfied. Don't give up! ;)

Tim made instructions here (http://www.speedbagforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1330) on how to post video's.

Actually, that platform looks pretty solid to me. Those Everlast XS Skunk bags are somewhat interesting to use. Looked like pretty normal rebounds to me. And it looked like you were whacking it pretty good too. Good work!

Is that the only bag you have?

<)<):)Everything you're doing looks fine! Great coordination and timing.
When I first started, I only knew the front circle punches. Get Alan Kahns
speedbag bible and DVD and just put some time in "under the board". In no time at all you'll be pulling off all the cool stuff, reverse punches, double punches, fist rolls, elbow strikes etc. etc. Check out all the great speedbaggers videos on the forum and on U-tube (Alan Kahn, Skunk, Tim, Spinsmashpop, Scissorhands, Metaldad, Biff, the list goes on and on). That in itself will give you all the inspiration you'll need!!!!!;)

Hi Novice....

From what I can see and hear you're doing fine. The sounds of the bag tell us a lot. Yours sound like a smooth even pace to your punching. You got going faster at the end but it seemed like a control acceleration, not a desperate attempt to keep up - so your pace is smooth and continuous. Fist contact seems solid without constant mis-hits on the bag ( I do notice a couple of mis hits with the left fist at first) but I don't hear any "late" contacts and it looks like you are making contact at the correct point in the rebound (note your contact afterimage).

Fist movements are a bit more difficult to determine since your video "crop" or zoom-in choice is a bit high and your hands drop out the bottom of the screen. You might zooom out or show more of your body/shoulder so we can see more of your arm movements and position.

but all told you look and sound pretty solid. Remember, speed bag is much more about "control" than "speed". If you are trying to hit "hard and fast" then chances are it will hold your progress back as you try to learn new techniques or combinations.

Thanks alot for your comments, i had to balance my camera phone on my dodge ball and it was just a spur of the moment thing, but i`ll get a mate to film me and make a better video for you...i can go at a slower pace for a long time...to be honest i`d like to make up some sort of cardio workout/training routine involving my speed bag, heavy bag & dodge ball... and of course get more skill full at the same time...

thanks again for everyones advice, this is something i really want to get good at...
