First of all,
Happy 4th of July USA members of the Forum!

(What I meant to say was, "Happy Independence Day USA members. Happy 4th of July to Everyone on the Forum! :))

Well, here I go again. Just can't hold myself back. This song rotated in to my playlist on my ipod, and I just had to play along with it. I seem to be stuck in an 80's phase lately. Please excuse the stumbling in the beginning...took me a few seconds to find the tempo...

Nothing fancy here, but, thought I'd share my addiction with everyone anyway. :o

Hey TommyT! No need to call...
I think my son Dan and his girlfriend, Melissa, might have already done so. They made the mistake yesterday of stopping by with Melissa's brother, Andrew. But, they started it!! They asked me how it's going... :o [Captured Audience!!!! out came the laptop and videos] I think Andrew (he's 27) was actually interested in the speed bagging. He said he had one when he was younger but had made the mistake of simply attaching it to the sheetrock of his room. Didn't last long. I took him out to the woodshed and he shows promise. Who knows, maybe he'll invest in another platform and bag in the near future!

That song is not the easiest to hit to - with a sort of wierd flow to the melody, but you figured it out. Great job on your part! I'd classify that as a tough tune to punch to.

Dee,
I like the way you take a technique (say, splitting the fists at 1:05), use it as a theme and work it for a while. Then you do another technique (I-DES & O-DES at 1:33), work it, explore variations, and then combine it with previous techniques (1:40 - 2:00). Interesting is the way you do splitting the fists then reverse the fist order by inserting a Reverse Straight Punch. At the finale (4:26), you work that combo by continuously alternating sides, just before you switch to the split screen effect. Man, you have that move down! Do you map this stuff out in your head, or do you just go with the flow?

Your iMovie skills are happening. That intro is so impressive. All I needed was some popcorn.

Yes. I never listened to this track much for that exact reason... Then, the other night I let the song play out and I found the beat. And, then, there was the "MsD-Factor" as per my modus operandi – the moon was in proper alignment with the northern stars, and my mood was just right... I kept it pretty simple. Not a big variety of punches... but I didn't think this song qualified to have a lot... it's very repetitious in itself, I guess I liked the simplicity of the punches that I did use... (Oh, I know this is far from perfect, and off beat in a few spots, but not enough to distract the viewer, I hope!)

I've been in a "I think I could/would punch to ANYTHING with a good beat!" mood since coming back from SB 2010. I am hopelessly  addicted right now. The bag has a grip on me and it's not letting go! :D :D

Hmmm... I don't know. I am so wrapped up in the flow of the song, I guess I must intuitively/instinctively (?) know when it's time to switch things out. Heck. I just don't know. :o

:D Thanks, Jack. (My hope is that my videos will entertain...) And, this addiction seems to be bringing out things in me I never knew I had...

The themes and variations are really mesmerizing to me. She's become a musician herself.

Thanks, Jim. You know, I started this 10 months ago simply as a way to get back in shape. Little did I know that it would lead me down this path of creativity that has been over-grown for so many years.

So, now, I'm taking chances – and just goin' with whatever gets my creative juices flowing... I guess speed baggin' to music is it! Glad I found a forum that serves my addiction well! I scour this forum, and value the information, opinions, etc. from everyone here. From the Newbie to the seasoned veterans of SB-ing. Everyone brings something to the table worth reading/viewing.

Great flow with the music!! This is WHY there is a SPEED BAG FORUM, there doesn't seem to be a "heavy bag" forum or a "rowing machine" forum. Yup, but still need lots of practice. Luckily, I don't mind! ;)

ME NEITHER! I heard one song on some soft-jazz radio station back in the 90's and on impulse, bought the cassette. Found out I liked only the song that was on the radio!

Thanks so much for the compliment, crapshoot! So, when are you gonna punch-drum to Metheny?!

I would say "Usually not". Mapping out a song, or section of it, is OK for practice but when your "performing" on the bag, improvising to the song, it's best if you don't have to think about your instrument, or how to play it. The repetition of practice - hours of time honing the techniques, combinations - and learning the sounds they make, will drill the store house of rhythmic potential. Then, when the music starts - you just let it out.

Hmmm... I don't know. I am so wrapped up in the flow of the song, I guess I must intuitively/instinctively (?) know when it's time to switch things out. Heck. I just don't know. :o
<)Y<)Y<)Y

Actually, Dee, that is the best way. You will find that certain combinations are really "dead on" for some parts of a song (2,4,8 measures) and then you need to move onto something else. You can always try to do those same combo's at the section (ie...the 5-1 combo on the melody pattern of "Mortal Combat"), or you can change it up. You may hit to the same song 20 times and never hit to it the same way, yet all will look and sound great. For instance you can do a "three accented beat sequence" with a 3-Punch Fist Roll (Front or Reverse), or a
3-Punch Monty starting from front or reverse, or an Outward, Downward or Side Triple Elbow Strike, yet the 3-beat pattern will be exactly the same. The sound remains the same, but the look is entirely different. And you really need that flexibility of sound reproduction because you're never sure where you hands will be when that 3 beat sound is needed.

Go on, Girl. You B Jammin!

YES! :) :) :)

Those hours and hours under the board are beginning to pay off!! I think this is key to capturing the essence of a song...

:D :D :D
Thank you, Alan! I'm a jammin' machine lately! In fact, after reading this post last night, I was so inspired by your words, I went out and "jammed" with Metheny for an hour or so... And now, I'm afraid I have another video to post. :o

I finally punched to (and recorded) the song I had ORIGINALLY intended on punching to – called "Are You Going With Me?." It's a LONG one, though – gonna take a while to upload :( – but I hope a few of you will appreciate and enjoy it. :) I was feelin' the "groove" big time! Maybe I'll make crapshoot a die-hard Metheny fan  ... ;)

It's encouraging to know that my method of incorporating different punches is working – well, it seems to work for me... I just can't think out a pattern in advance. I suppose that's what "jammin' " is all about, right? Just going with emotion, mood, etc. And, right now, Metheny – and my Title bag – is my conduit for conveying this...

Thanks again for the comment, Alan.

As I stated earlier, crapshoot, I'm really not much of a fan of Pat Metheny. I bought only that one album years ago because of just one song on it that I liked.

Well, the other night, I finally punched to that song. I was putting it off until I felt I had the stamina for it – after all, it's over 8 minutes long!

But, don't let the length of it scare you off – heck, I suppose the fact that it's another blasted Pat Metheny tune will do that!

If you liked the hypnotic effect you got from watching "Eighteen," you're gonna love this one! Just think...If you're having trouble sleeping at night, this "feature-length" video just might be the medicine for your insomnia! :D

It's called, "Are You Going With Me?"

Seems distance isn't a problem for you. The longer the vids go for the rawer they can become giving the viewer a better insight to the style and variation in which the puncher is developing when hitting to music.

Can't get on to your latest vid yet. It must be copping a few hits, I can't get a look in.:(:(

Hi deano! Glad to hear from you. Thanks for the comments.

Yes, a lot of people here have inspired me. I guess I can't go wrong when I have speed bag mentors such as the likes of the members of this forum. This forum has been a wealth of information – free for the taking. I hope that I can inspire someone to take up this passion.

I had such a great time at SB2010. Wish I could have sat around and talked more with everybody. But, I think I was in awe most of the time. :o

I envy Bif for having the chance to spend so much time with you and your dad in Keyport, NJ. I hope I can meet up with you both next year at SB2011.

Hey Roc. Sorry you can't view the latest video right now. Technically, I suppose it's not all that good, but I like to think that ARTISTICALLY, it's great! :D  And the camera angle captured some cool-looking moves...especially in the last couple minutes. (Hope you can stay awake for them, it's so long!:D)

As for going the distance. I haven't been pounding on that big red Everlast for 9 months for nothing! It's big, but it's BAD. If that bag doesn't build stamina, I don't know what will!

I know I'll never achieve the speed of Zach or Adam, or deano (and Tim is quite the speed demon lately on that little silver bag).
But I'm going to try my hardest to finesse the heck out of that ball. It has become my instrument, and I plan on playin' the ever-lovin' bladder out of it!

I live to speed bag.

Back in the 1990's I took home a video from the library, it was a strange training video with repetitive slow motion images of Marshall Holman bowling strikes with a perfect form, over and over again. I don't even bowl, but I found those sequences a mind-blowing eye-candy ballet.

This latest video of yours does much the same for the speed bag. I really like the lighting in this one and the mystery bagger with arms in black. Is this heaven? No, it's Seattle. Keep developing this art form, you are onto something special.

Dee, after the "Eighteen" video, I was going to recommend you try a longer piece like The Doors Light My Fire, but heck, that song is almost too short now, hypnotic, but a mere warm-up piece compared with where you're headed.

Great little movie, Dee. Butter the popcorn, dim the lights, and prepare to be transported to Bagway, Alaska or some other exotic little place.

Oooo... Madame Mesmer. I like it! Glad you liked this last one... and, I figure it'll either "make you or break you" as far as becoming a Pat Metheny fan! :D I hope my interpretation of that song came across in the SB-ing. (I might be "out there" ... but I think this 9-minute song has an eroticism about it... the beat, the way the music builds throughout, etc. :o sorry. Just my (feminine) take on the song... is this TMI? :o

Great routine and timing. And, I love your board!

I love my board too!!! Trainer Raul has been building free-standing platforms for years, and has it down to a science. The rebounding qualities are excellent due to the fact that it's a thick plate of steel.

I'm very curious about aad03's platforms – he has a couple that he designed and constructed and I think they're fiberglas. They look like they have good rebounding qualities. Very chic-looking platforms, I must say. And, then there's that fabulous lakefront as a backdrop. Must be sheer bliss to bag away on the waterfront like that... (BTW, congrats to aad03, he now has the designation of "Senior Member" on the forum.)

WOW Ms Dee!!! Super Cool Vid! Very nice use of dynamics, totally feeling the song and the vibe!! If I am not mistaken you haven't even been at it for a year have you? Very Impressive!

Thanks again, Daniel. Yes, I was definitely feelin' something when I did this vid... ;)

I've been at it for about 9-10 months now. I think it will be a year in the middle of August.

I should mention that I have had the good fortune of having an "in-house" trainer :D and thus, I've had some expert advice here on the homefront. And, then there's the fantastic platform I get to use – any time of the day or night (no neighbors close by). Raul's been pretty supportive of my passion, too. Although, there are some nights when he'll call me on my iphone out at the garage and beg me to come in for the night! :)
I got it bad, I tell you! :o

I've been away from the forum a bit due to a HEAVY work load and travel, so I'm behind, but, I often want to see MsDeville's vids because of the taste in music (and most are great songs I never heard), and the various camera angles along with the most comfy bagging environments.

Alan can jam with the beat and keep you watching him just from that, and you have a good beat yourself, along with the ladies touch of a "comfy setup".

I have to give credit to Raul, as well as my board... it has helped me a lot over these past several months of practice with its great rebounding qualities. It is definitely a unique set up.
Trainer Raul has been thinking up relatively easy ways (yeah, right! ) to put up one in a basement or garage. The hardest part might be getting the sheet of steel cut down to a circle or square. Put a metal pole a few feet into a concrete floor. Then, a little welding of rebar on the top plate for support, connect the drum to a metal post... a piece of cake. sure...

Thanks, TJ!! I am finding that I have to be in a particular "mood" to punch-drum to music. Haven't been "in the groove" for several days. It was almost as if I had forgotten how to hit the bag!

Well, after getting such a glowing "review" from you yesterday, I was inspired again. Went out last night and punched to my heart's content! ;) I was listening to vintage Pablo Cruise on my headphones at work (remember them? ...probably not your cup of tea as a teen!) and I liked the drum beat, the piano, guitar style, etc. Very upbeat, girlie(?) romantic music, I guess... :o)

So.... yeah, I'll be posting another punch-drumming session again soon – like it or not folks! :o

Yeah I definitely remember Pablo Cruise, used to play one of their tunes back in the 80's.
I go in phases too re: punching. If you're doing it every day, you need to take a break once in a while. But glad to hear your back in the groove. Cool pic of the stairway leading up to where most of the baggin' went on for 2010. Talk to you soon!

Well, you missed out, Jim! You could have seen "Dee in 3D" at the NJ convention! :p

Thanks, fingers. Com'on now. It's your turn to put up a punch-drumming extravaganza!

Yup. But, just a SHORT break... Or, I'll simply switch out my bag...

I love Donnie's spiral staircase at Real Gymm. The background in this picture is actually a photo I took from the plane on my way out to Jersey that weekend...
