Finally its time has come...and I'm counting on all my fellow speed bag addicts & enthusiasts!

As some of you may know, I'm not only a speed bag addict, but a filmmaker as well. Ever since finding this group, Alan, Tim...and everyone else, I've wanted to create a documentary all about the speed bag. So, I'm making one...and all of you can help make that happen.

It will be titled "Art of the Bag - A Speed Bag Story" and will give a brief history of it's origins and it's evolution into the art-form it is today.

Please take a moment to visit the Kickstarter Project, view the teaser, the project details and if possible, please make a small donation to the cause. We have to let the world know more about this truely addictive activity!

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/zazacast/art-of-the-bag-a-speed-bag-story

I will be attending SPEED B.A.G. III in July and will be getting interviews and speed bag footage, so if you can make it down, chances are good that you may even appear in the film (with your permissions of course). Wouldn't that be a hoot? ;)

For a mere $1.00 donation, you can become a part of the team and see your name appear in the credits...go a bit more and there are some really nice perks to be had.

So please, spread the word and pass the link along to everyone you know, post it on your Facebook page, YouTube Channel...anywhere & every where.

....and follow the production blog I've created for updates and breaking news on the project:
http://artofthebag.zazacast.com/

The final film will be entered in film festivals across the country and around the world... there may even be a screening close to you.

I hope you can join me in making this film a reality. Every little bit helps and ALL donations are most apperciated.

Bag On,
-Zaza

This is soooo exciting, Zaza. I am still so hopelessly addicted to the speed bag and love it when I find others who can relate to this passion of mine.

I have backed other Kickstarter projects, so I am familiar with the website. I just signed in and made a pledge. Come on everybody, join in and help Zaza make this project come to fruition. After all, how many times are you going to get the opportunity to see your name in the credits of a movie! :D

Just a suggestion, Zaza... maybe you could start a Thread in the main Discussion Category of the forum, with a link to this Thread. I'm not sure if everyone checks out the History Thread on a regular basis.

Dee.... that's a great idea, I wasn't sure which category was best. I always just hit the 'new posts' button when I come into the forum.

...we'd all like to see the "man behind the curtain"... but I don't think that's going to happen. I've been in touch with him. Maybe a little forum pressure?

So... we have Alan (of course)...then there's Tim (how can you tell this story without THE speed bag forum?)... Brian Tichy expressed interest...and Ms. DeVille is a must.

There are plenty more to come...and I'll be getting some help from the true historians here too! (thanks Jim)

To All forum members, trust me on this...

There is a huge number of dedicated and fascinating "baggers" in this world, many of whom (sadly...) are not forum members, or at least active ones. But...they are baggers non-the-less. and it's a world wide community.

I've had the good fortune to meet many via email, (letters before the age of email), phone, video's back and forth... you name it. Probably due to The Speed Bag Bible, I've got a huge list of names, files of letters, vhs video's sent to me.... you name it.

There is no shortage of great people to interview, no shortage of stories lines to be told, however there is a shortage of money. It takes money to travel to places and interview people. Not all can come to use. Some will require that the camera go to them. To video locations, where dedicated baggers are involved with speed bag activities in interesting ways.

To really make this film live, to make it a reality, worthy of perhaps national attention (PBS, film festivals... huge market) it will take MONEY to go and get the stories, and to do it right. ZAZA is taking the plunge, camera in hand, willing to go. "Have bag, have camera, will travel" but he can't do it on his own. He needs our help. this will be no picnic for him and he will need our support.

Kickstarter (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/zazacast/art-of-the-bag-a-speed-bag-story?ref=live) is the place to help. It's support to our own legitimate film maker. Let's make it happen!

I know times are tough and money is tight. If you can't give $$, then post the this link to kickstarter on every forum you visit. Facebook, Twitter, Foursquare, your own website.... you name it. Please help support this project by telling everyone you know. One law of marketing is that every person has a least twelve contacts that can learn of your idea and pass it on to others. Maybe you can't give, but a friend of a friend of a friend has an uncle who might lend support.

You never know. but I know this. I want to keep ZaZa in the air and on the ground, constantly traveling to tell this story right. And travel takes money. ZaZa can't be expected to travel to SB-III as well as 5-7 locations around the country to do interviews and locations without help. Personally, I'd love to send him to Australia, and interview Deano and Ted, or Britain to get some of our active UK crowd. there be Baggers in New Zealand and South Africa. We have strong bag support in Sweden, as well as a growing contingent in India. And let's not forget Canada, with many new baggers joining the ranks. At least, if my book and video mailings tell me about trends.

I know he can't get to them all, but let's help him get to as many as possible! Even if only in US. Spread the word!

Alan has given me one of the greatest gifts I’ve ever received, and I believe that he is an intelligent, ethical, honest man, and a really good guy.
I trust his judgment.
If he asks me to jump”, I ask “how high?”.

A well-done film on speed bagging - especially Bible-Style, could propel the art to newfound heights.

LET’S GET THIS PARTY STARTED!

Please contribute. Alan has given us something special - please help give him a little back so his work - and yours too, is further recognized for being among one of the coolest things a person can do.

I'm with ya, PunchDrummer! 100%!

I'm trying to do my part by posting the link to Zaza's kickstarter project to as many Facebook friends' walls and to my Twitter and maybe I should shoot a short vid for YouTube to alert the people who are subscribed to my YouTube channel. We need to get it OUT THERE ON THE WEB. Zaza has only a short window of time to raise these funds. You can pledge as little or as much as you want, from $1 and up. And there are nice little perks for pledging, too. :)

So, as PunchDrummer said, Let's Get This Party Started and pledge and pass the link on to others.

Zaza, if you are taking suggestions on who you might want to contact or interview, may I suggest Dee Pooler (the Bay area, I think), The Punch Professor (http://www.youtube.com/user/PunchProfessor/videos), I think he's in Florida... and, of course, there's Showtime Johnny Pal (he lives in southern California now). They have inspired many baggers.

I'm all in favour of this project and I've made some posts on most of the forums I am a member of - hopefully they won't get pulled as some form of misconstrued advertising by the mods...

I'll be pledging some funds towards the project in the next few weeks myself also :)

Yep. That usually depends on how it's presented and making it more of a forum based content "info post" with a link, or better yet, a few links, ...so as not to be an seen as a direct "in your face" request.

Sneaky....

Thanks to all for getting behind this project... it will be pretty cool and I hope it gets funded.

Dee- I'm still posting and hammering away at all the avenues available (YouTube, Vimeo, Facebook, etc...).

I would LOVE to be able to travel all over the world for interviews...and if we go WAY over the original funding, I'll be able to add to the travel, but as Alan stated, it gets expensive. That's why SBIII is such a great thing, I can get a bunch of people from all over in one place.

The more funding I get, the better and deeper the film can be...

This sure is a great community and all donations are MOST appreciated! :)

Cheers,

Hey Zaza. Have you considered contacting the major boxing/MMA websites to see it they will consider pledging? This film could be a real boost to the market and will very likely boost sales for Title, Balazs, Everlast, Ringside, etc. Or, how about contacting some popular boxers or MMA fighters...

How about some showbiz folks. My first thought was to contact Adam Carolla. I don't know if you know of him, but he grew up in southern California, and has a boxing background. A few years ago he spent a couple hundred thousand dollars on his own independent film about a boxer/construction worker closing in on 40, who "goes for it" one last time in the ring. It's called "The Hammer." It's pretty entertaining.

Adam has the No. 1 podcast right now on iTunes. He could reach a lot of people just by mentioning this on one of his segments. He's a funny, cranky, sarcastic type of guy, but any comment from him — good or bad — could help the cause. http://www.adamcarolla.com/ (here's an email address: questions@adamcarolla.com)

I'm putting together an email to him right now. Maybe if he receives enough emails about it, he'll respond. Or at least make a remark on one of his podcasts. I think he's considered a pretty generous person, and this is something he can relate to. I figure there's nothing to lose in trying...

Adam Carolla and "a pretty famous friend" (http://abc.go.com/shows/jimmy-kimmel-live) also started The Man Show (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0202741/) (pretty funny in a manly way....) and they are pretty close friends.

Jimmy kimmel just hosted the 2012 press club dinner (http://www.youtube.com/user/JimmyKimmelLive[/url) in Washington.

He also has a lot of youtube challenges for his viewers, to post video's about certain subjects (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4qA3Pk2p7tA) and he shows a few of them. Come to think of it, he is always issuing challenges, so perhaps we should get him to issue challenges (call him out on youtube..) to all talk show hosts to a speed bag contest.... hmm.

Actually, Kimmel often sends his side kick Guillermo out on assignments (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xuum94iLiHE), often doing silly things or challenges and wouldn't it be cool if he came to the Gathering to hit the speed bag. you never know...

I did tweet adam with a link to the blog http://artofthebag.zazacast.com/ (film needs to start a big quicker..)

and kimmel @jimmykimmel

But keep it up...

Remember.... the way Kickstarter works is you have to reach your funding goal in the allotted time (29 days for this project), or NO ONE WILL BE CHARGED A DIME.

So please, even a $1.00 donation helps....and if it doesn't reach it's goal, you won't even be charged for that.

Help get this film made and get people baggin'!

Best,

I know Zaza already mentioned this, but I just want to remind everyone who reads this thread about his Kickstarter project.

The way Kickstarter works, is that you pledge money for a particular project. If the project meets it goal, it is only then that the money you pledged is applied to the project. It is NOT a risky investment, because you DO NOT lose your money if the project doesn't meet its goal.

If every person reading this thread were to pledge just $10, it would bring this project closer to a reality.

And Zaza has some nice incentives for each level of pledge:

PLEDGE $1 OR MORE
FLYING CHEST BUMP and many thanks! To show you that every little bit counts, your name will be added to the final credits of the film as a valued supporter.

PLEDGE $10 OR MORE
Not only will you get added to the final credits but you will receive a limited addition ZazaCast Films lanyard!

PLEDGE $25 OR MORE
THIS is the SWEET SPOT.... not only do you get all of the above rewards (name in the credits & a really cool lanyard), but you'll receive an HD download of the film for your viewing pleasure!

PLEDGE $50 OR MORE
Now it's getting good... all the very generous supporters who opt-in at this level will not only receive all of the above rewards, but get a DVD of the final film. This DVD will include a bunch of the 'behind the scenes' footage too!

PLEDGE $75 OR MORE
FORWARD FIST ROLL! You get it all here...a big thank you, the cool lanyard, an HD download, the DVD w/BTS footage...AND an autographed photo of ALAN KAHN, author of the Speed Bag Bible.

PLEDGE $100 OR MORE
TRIPLE ELBOW STRIKE! This one is a knock-out and the highest level available. As a SUPER SUPPORTER, you'll receive everything above as well as an EXECUTIVE PRODUCER CREDIT.

Come on everybody. We have only a few weeks to help Zaza reach his goal. It's time to rally around this project and help to make it happen! It's easy to sign up to Kickstarter, too.

Hey Za,

:)

Every great film has a budget for the blockbuster, and plan B, C and sometimes D, just in case. The "Art of the Bag" should be no different.

For instance: We all know the epic film "Titanic" (1997) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120338/
) ran a cool 200 million. But he did have some back up plans, depending on sponsors and backing.

If he could not get the full cost of Titanic, the fall back was a disaster film called "Carnival Cruise", (http://arabnews.com/world/article563631.ece/REPRESENTATIONS/large_620x350/wor_concordia.jpg'), sadly, now being filmed on it's own. :(

the next idea for a smaller budget was about "A small yacht" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Winslow_Homer_004.jpg) and the lowest budget plan was a film called:"kayak" (http://www.sharkinformation.org/photo/great-white-shark-stalking-kayak/186557338/).

...but he raised enough for Titanic. Just lucky, I guess.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

The 1975 Classic "Jaws", became a hit, but they also had a fall back plan, a film called "Goldfish" (http://www.sustainabilityninja.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/goldfish.jpg) and a third called guppies (http://i3.ytimg.com/vi/UeZe7mO9IP0/0.jpg)

But they got 9 million, and we all saw Jaws.

then jaws 2,3 & 4.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

My point is: We can still make a lesser version then the one originally planned. Like the Highlander series, which first focused on
"The Gathering" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Immortal_(Highlander)#The_Gathering
) where the last few immortals would get together for the final encounter. That led to many more movies, as well as the successful TV series.

The speed bag "gathering" is thankfully not so fatal, but it is ongoing and there is plenty of historical video footage from the first two gatherings. (2010 - 2011). Lots already on Youtube, and I've got a lot of my own that was never posted.

This "first speed bag documentary" could be mainly about the gathering. Who are these people and why do they do this? that can surely be enough storyline, than just a thread in the larger story.

You will be there, along with many others, from several amazing baggers to beginners.
You interview the ones you can, You tell that story that is there, add in some colorful past historical facts, and credits.

In speed bag terms, we'll punch the bag we have, and not worry about the one's we don't. That will be enough and I'm sure you'll do a super job with it.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
...all pledges are appreciated....and even if you can't pledge, post a link and tell all your friends & fellow baggers.

My pledge stands regardless of the kickstarter limit.

I humbly suggest that to encourage confidence in the project, forum posts maintain an optimistic and positive perspective. It aint over ‘till it’s over, and it IS exciting, and it WILL happen.
Perhaps plan “B” could be to re-introduce the project, timed to take advantage of the attention and face-to-face goodwill SBIII will generate.
Promote it there - gently, enthusiastically, strategically.

Are you allowed more than one crack at it with KickStarter?

I’m doing my best to produce something that is really fun to watch and would help attract attention, but I’m not there yet. Going as fast as I can……

Replaced the steel "U" and bolt with zip ties - soon to be cable. Nice and quiet. Is that legal?

Very true. It ain't over till it's over and it ain't over yet. I am not familiar with Kickstarter, other than supporting several film proposals on it. I don't know how many bites of the apple you get.

You guys are great....and as I've stated many times before, this film will be made. As an indie filmmaker, I'm used to funding all my projects completely out-of-pocket. Sometimes they take a little longer and there is always a 'plan B'.... but I'm not ready to roll-over on this campaign or my 'A plan' yet! It's not over till the gravitationally challenged lady sings.

I've been working on this concept over the last year, there is a lot that goes into creating a comprehensive documentary that tells the story properly...much more then just getting footage. Story is key in any film, be it a narrative or documentary.

So, again, any pledges are most appreciated and please keep spreading the word.

Thanks for the support!

This all sounds great, thanks for the boost! Please have them get in touch with me through the Kickstarter Campaign: http://kck.st/IdOnPI
I hope something comes of it.

That said.... only 7 days to go but I haven't raised even a 20% of the goal :(, so it's not looking good at this point. Please, if you're at all into the speed bag, just starting out or an addict like a bunch of us here...pledge something. Even a $1.00 pledge helps to keep the campaign moving forward. Every little bit helps & remember, if I don't reach the goal, NO MONEY IS COLLECTED....so it won't cost a thing and you can use that money to buy yourself a new bag or one of the awesome swivels our fellow members have designed and built!

Onward... FYI, I just booked my room for Speed B.A.G. III and can't wait to get down there and start the interviews....and just shoot everything. Permissions are in place for the Real Gymm, so practice-up folks, I'm counting on you all to show the world your speed bag licks!

if we could get more members for this forum speedbagforum like in the five thousand range then maybe we can get more support for your movie. we just don't have the members. how can we get more members ? maybe open up the range to get more members here, like more heavy bag people, double end bag people, mook jong people, things like that some of us don't just hit the speed bag. we need more people coming here...ralph

Yeah... not as much interest as I thought in the film? With over 1200 members here, there have only been 7 pledges from forum members (Thank you guys SO much...you know who you are). It's just nice to know you have a little support.

No worries, like I've said before, this film will be made because I believe in the subject and think it will make an outstanding story that others will want to hear.

See you all in Keyport in July!

:(

got a notice from Kickstarter that it did not fund....

You know that feeling you get, in the middle of a really great workout, when everything seems great and your rippin' it up.... and then your bag goes flat, bladder blown?

Yep, that's kinda how it feels.

except a little worse.

Dear ZazaCast Films,

Unfortunately, your project, "Art of the Bag" - A Speed Bag Story, was not successfully funded. Because funding on Kickstarter is all or nothing, all pledges have been automatically canceled.

We understand the hard work that goes into running a project, and we hope it helped to build connections with your community.

Thanks to everyone who did support the film.... it was worth a shot....now I'll see you all in Keyport so I can get some great interviews and speed bag footage.

No biggie Zaza, you can do it anyway, rely on no one to let you down or discourage you from your vision. Just like working the speed bag, you must find your own way into a new rhythem, start slow, momentum will come.

NICE! I intend to pick up a copy of this book as well.

I just got one a month ago from an online book site but the cover pictures were ghosting and blurred

The text in the speed bag pages were OK which is nice since I've kinda "ruined" mine with writing and scribbling all over it.

My good friend and fellow "Schroeder's Raider" Bob Levin in Memphis has his original book signed to him by Dr. Schroeder. I don't know why but I never thought of having him sign mine. :(

20/20 hindsite has haunted me on that one.

Awesome, Joe, but I'm a bit worried about the word "addict", which indicates an addiction. Many will see this and realize they too have the same problem, or after watching the footage will want it, and they need to know how to get treatment. Treatment for addictions is very important, so I suggest before you release it you (you) or (we) contact:

Dr. Phil (http://www.drphil.com/),
Dr. Drew (http://www.hlntv.com/shows/dr-drew),
Dr. Oz (http://www.doctoroz.com/),
the doctors (http://www.thedoctorstv.com/main/tell_us_section_head),
Emergency Vets (http://animal.discovery.com/fansites/e-vets/e-vets.html),

as well as other online sources about this addiction, so they can be aware and prepare for the onslaught of people seeking treatment.

which begs the question.... just what IS the treatment protocol for a speed bag addict. Hmmm.

other than the obvious..... joining a support forum. Kinda like this one.

Simple, hang a platform in the attic. Then send the speed bag addict to the speed bag attic. Which bag's the question.

2:44 Miss R RSP (nice save, though.. :o )

2:57 Miss second fist (L), of RDP.

Yes! I have access to the only known footage of Doris DeGreen...and it looks great. Man, could this woman hit!

I REALLY want to buy the rights to use this, not only for the sake of the film, but for the sake of the history of the spped bag....so it doesn't get lost...BUT, it is expensive. I'm going to see if I can raise the fund (or some of them) by selling some stuff off. $1000.00 is my goal & will cover most of it...and allow me to use the footage in the film.

I recall that it's 35mm. Popular Science and Unusual Occupations were produced as shorts to be shown in movie theaters. I don't think that the current owners of these films (Sheilds Pictures) has transfered any of them to 16mm, although it's possible that they are available on tape, as they were shown on American Movie Classics back in the late 1980's.<)

Doris DeGreen

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Doris DeGreen is my grandmother, so I would be happy to relay stories of her time as a speed bag puncher. As stated previously, she was featured in Life Magazine, Popular Mechanics and a Paramount newsreel (in the Unusual Occupations series). The newsreel is available on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_03KIDtZv9U. She also toured the country on a vauldville-like circuit.

Punching a speed bag is not that hard, but doing it well and for any duration is challenging. Add the blindfold or multiple speed bags, and it is a real skill. But, she was able to still hit a bag proficiently into her 70's.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

:)

and I purchased an original copy of the 1933 Life Magazine she appeared in. Sitting right next to my Vaggies post card.

Will do... thanks again Ralph! :D

...you should get the bags today (monday) when you put the cleto bag on the S-hook slide the thicker side of the loop on first, in this way it will be easier to get off. also even though i changed the bladder with a title orange replacement bladder it did not seam to make the bag faster as far as i could tell, but what i noticed when having the cleto turned inside out is the lining of the cleto bag is of a higher quality than the other bags i have and the weaving of the lining is tighter than the others, i'm pretty sure this is why the cleto is a slower bag, but all you have to do is add a couple more puffs of air to the bag to get it to move faster. the bumble bee bag is the used one i bought from member speedkillz, it has cracks in the pannels but the seams are still good and it's a faster bag than the cleto and the bumble bee bag alan gave me. it also has a bigger sweet spot than the bumble bee bag alan gave me because of the shape (it has a flat bottom compared to alans bag)...ralph

i might send you the everlast swivel i just got last week (off ebay) it's a new one but it's not the one i was looking for. the guy posted it as. NIB metal everlast swivel, it must be the last batch of swivels everlast made because they are nothing like the other used one i got, the well is to big and the ball is to small, the eyebolt is bigger than my older used one but the S-hook is the same. this is the secound one i bought like this off ebay the first one was from a woman. i think i'll just take my used one to a machinist to make copies of but see if i could make them of better quality...ralph

I don't have a pair of five hundred dollar bills to slip under the door to you to secure the Doris footage. But are there enough of us here to pool funds to get you to the magic $1000 mark? Do keep keeping us informed before you would throw in the towel on obtaining that footage. Maybe you should be the silent auction recipient at this year's SpeedB.A.G. IV?

That would be nice, but I need the footage well before July.... the film needs to be done by then.

I have some stuff to sell here and will try to post in the next couple days to see if I can raise a little more.

I have some brand new Title Boxing tee-shirts, hats, banners...and a few pairs of gloves that people might be interested in.

...i'm gonna go out tomorrow and buy some 1/4 rod so i can make my own S-hook for the swivel since the one that comes with it is to small for the bags nowadays. wish me luck, but i'm pretty sure i could do it. i already reshaped an old S chain from a heavy bag into an S-hook so i should be able to do it...ralph

I've been very busy editing and just shot the punchdrumming segment here at my house with Matt Santiago (Ataraxis).

I'd like to thank Matt, he is just an outstanding person and was kind enough to take the time to drive up here and hit for me. We got some great footage and I'm putting together a really solid representation of punchdrumming...and a cool music video to boot!;)

Punchdrummer was asking for a wide shot to see the lighting set-up....so here you have it, my garage in all it's glory!
