View Full Version : Bag comparison
I picked up a few assorted speed bags in preparation for the Orlando seminar on 5/26. Here's a variety of bags from different vendors for comparison:
http://www.speedbagforum.com/images/dsc05305.jpg
From left to right, top row:
Title Classic 8x5 (http://store.titleboxing.com/classic-speed-bags.html) 5.2oz
Rival 8x5 (http://store.titleboxing.com/rival-precision-speed-bags.html) 5.8oz *** The Title web site calls this an 8x5, but I think it's a "small" 8x5 ***
Everlast 6x4 (http://store.titleboxing.com/titleboxing-everlast-speed-bags.html) 6.5 oz
Top Contender 7x4 (http://www.ringside.com/DETAIL.ASPX?ID=25131) 4oz (!)
Ringside 6x4 (http://www.ringside.com/DETAIL.ASPX?ID=25256) 4oz (!) *** The Ringside web site calls this an 8x5, I think it's 6x4 or 7x4
Bottom row:
Title 11x8 (http://store.titleboxing.com/titlespeedbags1.html) 9.2 oz
Title 10x7 (http://store.titleboxing.com/titlespeedbags1.html) 8oz
Everlast 9x6 (http://store.titleboxing.com/esb.html) 8 oz
Title 8x5 (http://store.titleboxing.com/titlespeedbags1.html) 6oz
The two 4 ounce bags are incredibly light. It's like punching nothing, especially after hitting the 8 oz and 9oz bags for any amount of time.
No video yet :( I need a 6 pin to 4 pin FireWire cable to import video to my new computer.
Here's a shot to compare the 11x8 to the 7x4:

I've been using the Title 9x6 red bag a lot lately. Nice feel for a 9x6. And the seams between the panels are a lot less evident than a few other bags.

Thanks for the comparison Tim. Interesting how all the bags in the top row are basically the same height. The Everlast 6x4 looks to be a nice shape. I picked up a Cleto Reyes XS a few days ago. It measures 7"x4.5". Fantastic bag. I'll post a comparison of the six bags I have tomorrow.

interesting that the everlast 6x4 is heavier than the classic title 8x5. tim, how does that 6x4 compare to the top contender bag? i've been thinking about a new bag and have been eyeing the classic title and that everlast bag.

I haven't had a chance to use the new Everlast extensively. This weekend I'll try to post some video of each bag in action.
The difference between the Classic 8x5 and the Everlast 6x4 is in the materials it's made with I guess.
The classic 8x5 is one of the lightest bags you can get, for it's size.

That's the bag of bags there. I had one of those in my high school days when you had to show up with your own bag at the gym, it was always the drumroll compared to others. I currently own the Ringside 5x8 and I agree with Tim I think it is either 7x4 or smaller. I love how quick and durable it is.

HMP is right. It's a beautiful bag. Buttery soft goatskin leather, impeccable craftsmanship, perfectly balanced. It even sounds different than other bags. Like it pads off the drum instead of slapping it. Weighs 5 3/8 oz. I love that Lonsdale Peanut but this Cleto Reyes is getting tons of drum time now.

Thanks,Good review and reference on bags, right now I'm learning with an Everlast #4208 large bag since I'm a rookie 3 days in:o but I'm sure as I progress I will be looking for another bag.

I have the 8x5. I'd say it's good if you like a heavy 8x5, i.e. not a featherweight one. Some don't like the sensation of punching thin air, and the Rival 8x5 has enough size to it that it has a nice feel.
Compare to the Title Classic 8x5 which is a very lightweight bag for it's size.
Alan hit on the 8x5 I have while he was at my house - I swear this is the last time I'll brag about that ;) Maybe he will chime in with his comments.
i have the rival 9x6 since january and love it. holding up great good action to

I bought that top contender 7 x 4 because I thought that since it was so light it would move fast. It doesn't. My everlast 7 x 4 moves faster with the same about of punching force, and it is a heavier bag. I think this might be because the loop on the top contender bag is longer. I was a little reluctant to order this bag because the loop looked too long. I was going to order some title bags but they look like they would have the same problem with the longer loop. The everlast bags are great, and I am going to order the tuf-wear 10 x 7 because their loops look like the everlast loops.

To be honest, Tim, I didn't really hit it long enough to make any insightful or opinion changing comments. It was a nice bag and I did like it. I'll probably get one at some point in my life, for I really like the look of them. For me to really "use it" as a regular part of my workouts, I'd have to hit it to music and see how it feels.
I do remember it being a bit heavy on the hands, but you really adapt to that pretty quick on any bag when you use it for a few workouts. Currently I've been smackin' the Title 8x5 classic for the last few weeks.

Would that be the classic 9x6 or the normal 9x6?

When I posted that, it was the normal 9x6 (http://store.titleboxing.com/titlespeedbags1.html). The classic model 9x6 (http://store.titleboxing.com/classic-speed-bags.html) is a bit smaller and lighter.
I was using the "Normal" 9x6, a bit underinflated at the time, because I was recovering from a left shoulder surgery, and was using softer slower arm movements with little force required. It was painful to keep up with my "normal" training bag size, 8x5, (too fast) and a 10x7 was a bit too heavy on contact with my left arm. Right now, I have a classic 8x5 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T9S1ZEpf3So) on hook, which has been my bag of choice lately.
But I do like the normal 8x5 (yellow) and normal 9x6 (red).

Ever since I received my yellow 8x5 from title, I'm reluctant to move back to a bigger bag because I like the speed. But I think it's time to mix it up, I'll have to pick up one of those title colored 9x6.
I'm thinking of getting the Ringside 9x6 ultimate speed bag since it's only 5more dollars than the normal one. These seem more unique in shape than the other bags.
What do you think about the top contender bags? They are definitely priced right, but they seem indentical to the regular colored title bags to me. I might get a 6x4 outa their lineup though, the smallest bag I have right now is still 8x5.
Seems like there's only great things to say about the cleto reyes bags, but that's a little expensive more my tastes right now.
What do you think about the top contender bags?
The top contender bags are light even taking their size into account. They are made with a very lightweight leather.

That bag is what I started on also, a christmas present. Make sure you have plenty of air in it. I was using my bag underinflated and I was smashing it, but once I got used to my 5x8 I pumped the 4208 up so it was actually tight skinned and it rebounds "correctly" now. The 8x13 bag has quite the arc, but it bounces like a basketball now. I never really missed those board vibrations caused by that huge bag after switching to my 8x5 ( :

I guess I'll skip those then, I like weight behind what I'm hitting. I suppose the reduction in weight(materials) is reflected in the cost.
Looks like I'll be heading for a Everlast pro 7x4, title colored 9x6, and the ringside 9x6 ultimate.
I'll be sure to post when I get them

Since adding the lowes pine disk to my platform, I actually enjoy hitting my top contender 7 x 4. I said some pretty negative things about it previously, but with the pine disk the rebound is better and so I will ocassionally use the bag.
