Old school platform spotted on the USS North Carolina

The USS North Carolina (WWII battleship) is a tourist attraction in Wilmgington NC.

I've been there before, but this past week I was there again and something caught my attention...they had a speed bag platform mounted in the mess hall !!!! ... pretty neat

It was made by "medart". Really solid platform and really, really big. The swivel was nothing more than an eye hook though.

Medart, now there is a name I haven't heard in eons! They used to specialize in outfitting high school and college gyms. They built everything from bleachers to basketball backboards, scoreboards gymnastic equipment etc. Apparently they're no longer in business but there are firms that supply replacement parts for the folding bleacher systems and the locker room stuff.

I've got a great indoor pistol range 2 miles from my house (Shoot Straight Apopka FL). If ammo wasn't so darn expensive I'd go every week.

Google books lists a brochure from 1896 for the Medart platform,,,

Unfortunately, they don't have a scan of it. I see the term "drum" goes way back.

Yes! I wonder if Dutch has spent any time with Google Books or Google Patents. Here's a simple swivel idea from 1897:

Here, I thought I had come up with this idea, but of course, as the saying goes - "There's nothing new under the drum."

Man, nice find. I have a nicols swivel from 1900, which was a rope based swivel. No rope came with it but the shape is similiar to the one in your patent link.

Here are some pics of the Nicol Swivel from 1900. Like most things from that era, very ornate details.

                        I like the detailing.

After watching that video of a broken chain link swivel modified into a rope swivel, I've been wondering if the rope idea still has some merit if a quick change solution could be incorporated. Seems that a rope that is free to rotate where it's attached to the board can be smoothly omnidirectional -- like a quiet ballhook. Quiet would drive some of you nuts, but would satisfy others.

I've seen this style swivel in Sears catalogs dating from the early 1900's. So far I haven't come across any evidence that Sears offered any other style prior to WWI. Rope and ball swivels appear to have been in general use up well into the 1930's.

It has taken me 3 viewings of this to swallow my jealousy.

The Craftsmanship on that set-up is Merciless!!

I am PASTING this PIC to my archives and Throwing Down The Chall-ahnge to my Carpenter on MOUNT #2.

Great Post, Tim. It took me quite few apples and pears to find my way through it.

FOR ME: it's the MOUNT that Draws Me To It. I have to have a mount that Won't Let Me Down - on the Contrary.
