It seems to me the guys in this forum are training heavy bags, speed bags double ended bags. Who is skipping? I have a cheap speed rope and 4 or 5 rounds every week.

Pretty good at most skills but crossing my arms over. Any tips. Seen some nice vids on youtube but anyone out here doing rope work?

Can't do my vid as I have to train at the gym Basement Ceiling is too low for serious jumping.

The man that taught me the speed bag was also an ace with the rope. Years ago I could do a few moves, criss crosses, swirls and reverse jumping. But I gave it up after my neck surgeries a few years ago. I just can't take the pounding of the jumps.

but here are a few links that might help.

new Jump rope skills (http://library.thinkquest.org/5407/skills.html) (* you probably know most of these)

Here is a long list of possible skills.... (http://www.erso.org/new/index.php?id=287) (* doesn't teach how..)

JR skills by American Heart Assoc (http://www.americanheart.org/presenter.jhtml?identifier=2320)

You might do well by checking out some of the jump rope competitions (http://www.usajrf.org/cw_calendar_new.asp). Go to them and meet some fellow jumpers.

Jump rope organizations (http://www.drjump.com/Rope%20Links.htm)

Books and charts of rope skills (http://www.jumprope.com/index.php?option=com_oscommerce&osMod=index&Itemid=26&cPath=6)

Watching advanced rope skills is like watching an advanced speed bag routine. Amazing to see and here.

insane jump rope.. (http://www.ebaumsworld.com/video/watch/40539/)

Ross Emamait (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lVkYjp4mqnc&feature=related) (* listen to the rope!)

Ross again (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MD3uicAYtdw&feature=related) (*awesome rope work)

Wow. In Ross' second link, he's so fast the rope is invisible, except for an occasional glimpse near the right handle.

I've exercised with simple rope tricks here and there. Initially I had trouble crossing the rope over, too, until I realized I needed to stretch my arms a little further around me, almost as if giving myself a hug (but not quite). Do you practice in front of a mirror? That might help, too. You can see what the rope is doing based on your hand/arm positions.

Great links appreciate it...

Giving myself a hug. I train at the gym as my basement is just a few inches too low but that is a good point with the mirror.

I'm going to break up my training and do my cardio routine twice a week but another 2 times a week take the rope and work on new skills and combos for 15-20 seconds when I'm fresh. I just hate falling flat on my face in pubic but no pain no gain. Maybe be in the fall I can post a vid....

Dr. Schroeder (the guy that taught me speed bag and rope) had us do a boxing circuit in the boxing class, and we shadow boxed and jumped rope in front of the mirror.

I just started jump rope. Been able to cross my arms since I was a kid. I'm a smoker trying to quit, on my 5th day now. When I really need a fag I'll have a go of the rope. My biggest problem is lower back pain. Tried on grass and just doing little spurts of 30 secs and resting a couple of Min's with a max of 5 Min's per day. Taken advice from here.

Hopefully I'll loosen up a bit.

Off the smokes since Nov 17, 1978, almost 30 years. If you want to quit Vini, you can do it. The key is wanting to quit.

I used to jump rope quite a bit in the 60s and 70s. My original plan when I bought the speed bag was to also get a heavy bag. I was going to incorporate the two (along with jumping rope) into my fitness routine.

I got so into the speed bag that I doubt I want the heavy bag. I should get back into jumping rope. I just don't know if the joints can take the hammering. I had to give up running a couple of years ago, and I now just rely on walking for my aerobic exericse. I usually walk between 12:30 - 12:45 minute miles. I'll do 2, 4 or 6 mile walks, depending on time. The 4 or 6 milers help to get the heart rate up.

At my age, I'm just happy to get out of bed in the morning. ;)

Hey thanks again metaldad! It's day 8 and still haven't had a single puff.:D

I had surgery on both knees twice (4 ops) and have to take care when rope jumping. Your idea of a mat sounds great! Must look out for something to suit my needs. Running is a bit harsh on the knees for me.

If the mats don't work out for you, try the stationary bike with a good computer attached and a heart rate monitor.20 -30 mins at a good pace should work. You could even work in sprint drills. Zero shock on the joints and a great cardio workout. Gotta take care of those knees! :D:D

Ever tried a kettlebell? For a, low impact, high power/aerobic workout tool, i've never seen better. Perfect compliment to the speed bag. Proper form extremely important; good source -www.dragondoor.com Being an "old guy" i went with a 26# kettlebell; proved to be just right, with plenty of room for inprovement...

You've gotten past day 3! Awesome! Cigs don't help you get through any problems.

Alright Biff!

I quit 1 1/2 years ago. Can't believe it. It took being sick for 2 days to realize that was my chance at jumping into a non-smoker world.
I did it to see 100. Did it for my kids. I don't have to have cigs mocking me every hour. "Haha, c'mon and smoke us up! We are the answer! Haha." Cigs solve nothing, they've never solved one problem of mine. But they make you think they do for a few minutes. And then you die!!!!
I don't have to stop in wasting time on line at 7-11's. I don't smell like smoke. I don't have to hide it from my kids. I save a lot of $ on life ins. and the ever rising cost of a pack. And I don't waste an abundance of energy figuring out when to reward myself with a cig after I get a little work done. It's a joke.
Great idea UK Speedbag; rather than staring into space as you poison yourself, go jump some rope. Or go slam the bag for 3 minutes of power FCPs! No finesse, just balls out!
Oh, if only we all could have a platform on the back of our cars like Skunk does!
BAG ON!

I've not done a kettle bell per se, but I have done "Dumbell Swings" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J-_nFtioyY8&feature=related) as part of crossfit, and it is indeed a killer, especially when supersetted with some other moves. I believe that is a move typically done with KBs.

Had to reply to this..... I quit smoking 2 yrs ago....congrats to you all for quitting....as for fitness check out my routine....I've always skipped rope it doesn't bother my knees...but lots of roadwork does.... Like said... I do the exercise bike instead of running... I'm not boxing for usaboxing anymore so I don't see the purpose of doing roadwork for cardio when my bike does the job.. I'm just trying to stay inshape...

I don't remember !lol. That's a good routine. It's kind of what I was doing. My work schedule is nuts(I work nights.....long nights) so my workouts suffer. I used to jump rope in my garage but now space is encroached upon. I do alot of bodyweight: bodyweight squats, hindu pushups, pullups, dips, vertical knee raises(I have a power tower, shadow boxing with tension bands/weights and without sometimes 2 rds sometimes 3, 3 rounds speed bag, 3 rounds double end bag, basic movements on the wooden dummy and when I get around to putting it back up, 3 rounds heavy bag. Because of my schedule I don't do this everyday, but I do try. Sorry for the long post.:D

Yeah, I'm lucky I don't have cancer or emphyzema. You tried the Century freestanding platform I take it?
