    Everlast Reflex bag

The local Aldi grocery store in my area has started selling Everlast equipment. Santa got my son a focus mitt set($14.00) and I found a reflex bag for $50. I know that ain't the cheapest they get but I couldn't pass it up. I also know the debate rages over the Everlast vs The Title Cobra Reflex. Wish I could afford the Title. Already have a Title DE bag I'm happy with.

met, I've looked at the reflex style bags and like most of us, wanted to get one to add a new toy, but they just seem lacking compared to a DE bag. So I went reading forums of those that had both and all of them that I've read said the DE bag gives more of a challenge. If anything, the reflex is much easier to setup anywhere with no cords. Plus, the bags don't require air. If you ever get the Title, let us know how you like it.

you're right. I love using my DE bag and when I get the time, I'll set up the reflex bag and try it out.

met, as I posted a few times on this forum, I made a frame for my upper DE bag cord to travel in so it only has a few inches of side to side travel but full length travel front to back. I leave the cords on the loose side to get a lot of bag travel. The reason for the frame is I like to throw in a lot of left and right hooks as the bag is coming at me to really keep the timing right.

Without the frame, that would make the bag go all over the place and I don't see the point of just hitting the DE straight all the time or keeping the cords so taut.

I remember the frame!! That was one of your first posts wasn't it? I try to glean what I can from all sorts of sources. I notice alot of Mexican fighters seem to keep it really tight. This video is pretty in depth about useage and setup. I have my bag just slighlty below face level. I go back and forth on height and tightness.

Seen that vid before. Ok, I am NO expert, but see how he throws just straight punches. I agree to keep it loose for more travel but you throw a hook at a loose DE bag and it's all over the place. What good are just doing straight punches?

Also, just as my learning experience, I thought I was good at dodging and blocking the DE bag, then after I made the RBT and got smacked around a lot, it made me see I was really keeping my hands too low and not bringing back quick enough.

I have been hitting a DE bag for a while, have two 9 inch, two 7 inch, and a 6 inch, also I have the mexican style double bladder bag, as for the cords, you should use both, a set of heavy duty rubber cords for speed and timing, but also a elastic bungee style cord too, this will allow the ball to travel more, help you learn slips, ducks, and steppin out, also it makes you keep your hands up cause trust me with the looser cords the bag will hit you, the tighter cords are great for working combos, the bag won't move around all that much, this is the tighter cord method, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-OfFI...eature=related and this being the loose style http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jxqBu...eature=related

skater, I like the loose method vid. I wish I had a high ceiling like that to make the upper cord really long but there is only so much you can do with an 8 foot ceiling in the home.

Notice every time he threw a hook he had to reposition himself for that new angle of the ball travel. If you try to hit it swinging side to side like that and not change position, it's a good way to look foolish.

skater, thanks for posting both links. noticed how in both the bag height is at face height or slighty lower, that's about how I have my bag. I have it tight for now but have enough bugee cords laying around to go back and forth between loose and tight.

atgatt, I'm in the same boat with ceiling height. I get it about throwing hook punches too. I still need to work the basics.

I also have and 8 foot celling, and I found out by using a 15 inch rubber cord at the top will allow a little bit more movement then using a strap or rope. Trust me a DE bag with looser cords can make a fool out of anybody, I have taken my fare share of hits to the face and I have to lie to my friends and say I got in a bar fight or something, ha ha.. its good practice to move around the bag and side step like after a left/right hook, the bag will be traveling in a side to side motion, as soon as I throw the hook I side step in either direction to get the ball traveling in a front to back motion, or I'll do a few slips till the motion of the ball slows down, a boxer buddy of mine told me that side to side motion the bag travels is very important, in a boxing match your opponents head makes the same movement, if you can hit the bag while its doing this, then you can hit you opponent. Great DE bag combo is a jab, right cross, then left uppercut, right hook, side step either side, then a few slips and back to the jab, you should never hit a DE bag, upper cut bag, or heavy bag and not move around, left to right, front to back, add in slips, and give a lil step in when you throw the jab, foot work is very important in boxing training, bad habits start in the gym by standing still and throwing punches at a bag.... good luck guys, watch out for that rebounding bag cause its not pretty, ha ha

This may be one of the best youtube videos on using the DE bag, shows great combos, and a good drill to use too, the jab and side step which he does at about 1:39 in the video Great DE Bag video This is another great video this time with the looser cords, great slips and foot work Loose cord video I would keep my guard up a lil more then this guy does too, cause he might be able to slip and dodge that bag, but an opponent in a ring would eat him alive

skater/met, the vids still show the tight, barely move setup and the loose, seldom throw a hook setup. Again, I am no expert but we all know how we like our setups. I have a 9" Everlast like that guy had in your last vid, it certainly moves more due to the extra weight, but it is too big for my liking. Plus, that guy to me holding his gloves below his chin all the time is not good protection. Just an observation. If he did that with my RBT, he'd be black and blue all over his face.

After getting back from a bike ride and then doing my rounds on the various bags, it occurred to me, if you can't raise your ceiling, then just make your upper cord longer. I did that by replacing my upper eye hook with a pulley, ran the longer bungee cord through it and secured the cord end near the wall. So now the whole cord stretches and gives more travel. It's not as good as a high ceiling but it helps.
