    SpeedB.A.G VIII

    (May 12 2017)

I just spoke to Nancy, our contact at the Hazelet Best Western. There has always been large area events around KeyPort NJ the week of the Speed Bag Gathering and the Week after, creating a full booking at their hotel.

This year "someone" moved the big festival from the week after the gathering to the same weekend [July 14 - July 16 2017] as the Gathering. This will bring busloads of people to keyport.... SO if you are planning on attending SB-VIII and want to get a room at "the" hotel of choice, you had better call quick, ...and there is no group discount established. Due to the Demand for rooms in the area, no hotel will apparently cut rates. Rates are about $100 up to Thursday, and $144.00 Friday and Saturday.

    BEST WESTERN Hazlet Inn
    3215 Highway 35 Hazlet , New Jersey
    07730-1539, United States
    Phone: 732/888-2800

IF they are full, tell her you are a speed bagger and she can try to get you high up on the cancellation list. In the past she has pulled off some miracles to get some of us rooms when last minute cancellations or no-shows occurred.

It's something that happens in areas where the summer events are not set in stone. Been to more than one that room rates skyrocketed overnight, then became non existent because of a fair or festival moved a date up. About the only way to avoid the problem is negotiate a block of rooms as soon as you can, if things don't work out you can cancel the reservation if done within the period of time stated in the contract.

The gathering has had a room block discount since it's inception in 2010, however nobody called this year to set the dates or negotiate it. In fact, the last few years have had very few RSVP's and a lot more "show ups" and hope to get a room. That is one of the problems I've seen (IMO only) that with each year interest, and more specifically - "commitment to attend" has dropped off. I have more than a few private messages and emails to "try and have a gathering in THIS location or THAT location, ....Usually a place that makes it easier for that one person to attend. But of course THEY don't want to organize it and take the lead. Speed Bag Sparky did it in Saint Louis in 2011 but attendance from forum was low, and he's been out of this for about four or five years now. And many of the first, second and third year attender's have dropped off as other things in life have overtaken their interest, time or money. To be brutally honest, The fine stock of amazing East coast baggers have pretty much kept it going, because they can drive there within a few hours Most of them don't get advanced reservations anymore, staying a night or so. It's hard to plan anything around NO hard, definite commitments for numbers on attendance. With virtually no local promotion, media or solicitations it's hard to make it a "big event." Donations and Sponsors have gone as well. We used to fund raise for charity...haven't done that since the Gathering-III on now we're on 8. I can say that if some more of the newer members don't start showing up, It may be time to re-think doing it annually.

All the above, just my opinion.

This is the first one since I joined the forum, and I hope to attend. At some point, please post more info with specifics. Times, what to bring, what to expect, where to park, etc.

          Sure thing

          Date:

For several scheduling reasons We settled on the week after the 4th of July:

2017 - July 14-16. (it used to be 4 days...thur, Fri, Sat, Sun but we dropped Thursday due to low attendance AND we could finally leave the speed bag racks up (Setup and Take down is a real chore). Last year we talked about dropping Friday for the same reason. Although Friday Night has always been a baggin' bonus.

          Activities.

Trying to "schedule" a day full of activities has been near impossible. Corraling a bunch of speed baggers is like hearding cats. Attendees of all levels (beginner to master) come for their own reasons - but mostly to hit the bag and learn from some of the best on planet earth. Have set activities scheduled seem to stop the magic, forcing people with other interests to stop and watch - and "not hit" while the activity was ongoing. And sometimes (*most of time) the attendees who are uninterested in that specific activity do what most of us would do...find another bag and hit it. And there lies a bit problem for scheduling an activity, for it is often impossible to hold some type of informative discussion or lesson with a bunch of other speed bags pounding away. We initially tried some organized lessons and punch drumming classes, but they quickly fell victim to the non-stop speed bagging. I think most of use long time attenders have now learned the real magic is finding a person to learn from, and learn from them, or watch them teach someone else. For me, the real magic is watching Matthew, G-Town, speedy Tommy T, Speedbagskunk and Justin teach each other new stuff. Every year they bring some kind of new innovation on a technique or combination.... and it gets crazy. For the lesser skilled, your real joy will be watching them and then having the show you also. There are really no ego's under the board. We all want to teach as many as we can, so just find a bag and ask for help.

The one scheduled activity that HAS become a hit is the contests utilizing The Speed Demon counter
          (http://speedbagdisplay.com/)

This has led to some incredible competition, which is also fun to watch. Here are some past records (http://speedbagdisplay.com/records/)

          Location:

          Real Gym, Keyport NJ

          HOTEL

          Best Western Hazlet, NJ

          What to expect:

Not sure why the above video won't show here...
SPEEDB.A.G. VIA great time was had by all....if you missed it this year, keep training and be sure to attend next years gathering. TOO MUCH FUN!

Baggers start drifting in around 9am but 10am is the normal start.

I've been planning on attending since I joined, but work threw me a curve. I just happen to have a class I have to go to the week before and after Speedbag VIII. The class is all week and I sleep there. But I don't have the class on the weekend. I live in South New Jersey and the class is in west Maryland. I will leave the class Friday night and be home that night. I can then come on Saturday and possibly Sunday, because Sunday I have to drive back to Maryland for part two of the class.

I can be available Saturday morning to help set anything up, and can be available Saturday night to help clean up. Sunday I can help setup in the morning but I have to leave for Maryland probably around 6PM if I can make it.

I have extra swivels and a lot of bags if they are needed.

I burned that one and 12 three minute rounds on a CD and I can go back and forth between 3 or 5 minute rounds depending on what I'm doing and how much time I have that day.

Hey Jaja (kinda like zaza another great bagger)

You can always bring bags and swivels because some of the crowd probably has not gotten to hit that particular bag or swivel (more so bags..) but they love to put 'em on a board and punch 'em up.

Ok you got it. Can't wait to see some of the awesome people hit these bags up close and personal. I know I'm gonna get a lot of great tips and help, and will come out of this with some new moves.
