Ringside Speedmaster Speed Bag Gloves (Model STKE)

My introduction to the speed bag happened at a boxing gym where the instructors were woefully uninformed on speed bag technique. In fact, for those first 6 months, I thought there was only one way to hit the bag (FCP in Alan Kahn's terminology). Nevertheless, I loved the speed bag and practiced tirelessly, until my hands started to hurt (I was using hand wraps but the repitition of using a single punch for 30 minutes 5 times a week eventually took it's toll).

Life intervened and I dropped out of the gym and acquired a home speed bag setup. One of the first things I did was get a pair of Ringside's Speedmaster Speed Bag Gloves. They have thick padding across the fingers and knuckles. The knuckle padding is almost too thick though as it adds a bit too much bulk for speed bag use. That being said, these can also be used for double end bag and heavy bag work, where the bulky knuckle padding is a positive.

On the double end bag the exposed fingers and thumb can be a liability if you are using bungee cords with metal S hooks to support the bag.

For heavy bag work these are nice when combined with handwraps if you are working speed and not power punching.

I also think the Ringside speed bag glove as shown has too much material on the side of the glove. The Front Circle Punch (FCP) hits the little finger side of the fist, and I find the bunched material there problematic. It reduces my feel of the bag, and also slows it down. The Reverse punches (from behind the bag) also contact the index finger/thumb side of the fist, and the extra material ridge is also annoying.

I much more prefer Harbinger classic training glove for speed bag work. The soft leather grabs the bag well, and there is no seams over the fist contact surfaces. Many weight training gloves have seems on the contact points, but this one does not.

I also like the TKO gel wraps.

Yes, I have pair of the Everlast Gel Gloves. I like them for the fact that they are neopreme, and provide some extra cushion for my outer pinkie fingers. On my left hand, the large (middle) knuckle of my little finger, which takes a lot of contact, is getting arthritic, and normal speed bag pounding without coverage hurts. These gloves are nice for that.

But, they also have a big "plug" of cushioning over the front of the fist (Front Straight Punch contact area) and that is very noticeable. Probably fine for heavybag, but rather annoying with doing Front-Reverse Linking fast. You can feel the thick pad shifting in the glove to keep up.
and they are kind of a pain to get on and off. If you DO get a pair, I suggest you cut the two little straps off that criss cross on the back of the hand. They serve no purpose that I can see except to make closing the wrist strap more difficult.

I am going to try and find some old black neopreme scuba gloves, cut the finger tips out, and use them on speed bag. That might be the best padding to keep the knuckles from bruising each other in side fist contacts.

In my by gone training days (hours under the board at a time...) I always hit barehanded. Best bag feel and reduced hand weight. But you can't outlive your genetics, and hand arthritis plagues all my senior family members, as it now plagues me. I started with the Harbinger Gloves (really like them, with many dead pairs around) and now also like the TKO gel wraps.

im using gloves but i prefer without because the bas is faster without gloves and you feel much more the bag but since i dont use gloves i have some injuries on my hands
