    Dear Mom...

Here's a two-fer.... Happy Mother's Day (cause none of us would be here without them) & the Nichols swivel back in action.
I can't thank Alan enough, that swivel just belongs on my vintage platform (and it loves it's new home)!

I'm by no means a punchdrummer like a bunch of others here, but damn if I don't have a great time working at it. Hope you enjoy.

Yes, it does. Looks and sounds great. Thanks for post that.

Gotta tell ya, I've walked this earth for 62 years, and this is the first mother's day without mine. Lost her to lung cancer in Oct 2012. Perhaps you noticed I was off the board for awhile. At that time, a month or so before the end and after, speed baggin' just didn't seem very important.

She used to show off my book to all her old lady friends and they'd ohh and ahh over it, and ask her what all those symbols and writing meant. She'd shrug and say "I don't know, but he does..".

So if you can still talk to and hold your mother, do it Today, and tomorrow and the next, and the day after that. Because when she's gone your gonna wish every day was mothers day and she was here to share it with. Missing mine pretty serious today.

Sorry Za, you're wrong. You're every bit a punch drummer as the rest of us, throwing out some great combinations and rhythmic beats dead on time. You've got your own "beat", interpreting that song your own way. Great set and video.

Thanks for everything Alan, the kind words, the inspiration...and the swivel.

That was a really beautiful tribute to your Mom and all of us who watched it could feel that it came straight from your heart. My Mom has also passed and I have been thinking about her the past few days and feeling blue. Your effort made me smile. Thank you!

@Alan - Sorry to hear about your mom. I hope you're doing all right. For what it's worth I lost my Grandfather a few years back. (He was 92 and went in his sleep in his own bed not too shabby ) He was an amazing guy and I instantly regretted not spending more time & getting more of his stories/experiences out of him. I envy his confidence daily.

With this in mind I am spending as much time as possible with my Dad lately. He's been helping me (more like me helping HIM) re-do my basement top to bottom every weekend for months now, so once again I am taking your advice.

He's also been helping tweak my platform too The man is hell on wheels with a toolbox!

92 is a long life! My mother died at 86, probably due to smoking for 50 years. Her parents, grand parents, aunts and uncles all lived into their mid to late 90's. They were miserable for the last few years, but alive.

Glad you are getting to do that with your dad. I did a similar thing with my mother, which is also one reason why I retired when I did. When she could still go out I'd take her to a quiet breakfast place and we'd sit and talk through a pot of coffee. or Two. I bought several unobtrusive HD keychain cameras and would set one the table facing her and just record the conversations. I'd purposely ask her lots of things about her youth, about her pre-dad boyfriends, than about her and my dad's dating and pre-kid days etc. I did this because she was like a lot of people, speed baggers in-particular I guess, that just freeze and get worried about a bigger, noticeable camera pointing at them. I never told her it was a camera, for fear she would still "worry about saying something wrong" as old people are sometimes prone to do. I didn't need the "video" so much as wanted the audio stories. As their more recent, short term memory goes, those memories of long ago start coming up and it becomes easier to talk about their past, for they struggle to remember the present.

PS: I also used this during her many medical visits required, recording the doctors exam and explanations. You will soon realize the wisdom of that when you see a Radiation oncologist, Medical oncologist, Pulmonary specialist, internist, cardiologist and a few other specialists in ONE day or every other day, for weeks on end. I dare you to remember the information and directions they give you. After each one of them, my mother would look over at me and say "..what was all that he said". So I could review the hidden video later to try and keep it all straight. Pretty handy little camera's and great quality for their size.

Anyway, the point is try and record some of your time together in an unobtrusive way, if for no other reason than your great great grand kids can hear his voice and see him talk. Me, I found out my mom was a bit of a wild child in her younger days, danced until dawn on more than one occasion after she left home, lost her first love in WWII (pilot, went down at sea), Once drove from Blytheville Arkansas to Corning Arkansas with a LIVE TURKEY in the trunk of the car, and a whole lot about my dads family I never knew, for they all died before I was born. I wish I had started recording her long before I did because I fear we were just scratching the surface.

Allen I'm sorry to hear about your mother.
I'm happy you shared your thoughts about catching old stories on video.
My mother is in the early stages of alzheimers.
Great idea to ask her all about her life before she was married!

                  Nice video Zaza!

Sorry to hear about that Jake. During my career with the VA medical centers, I worked a lot in the long term care units with elderly veterans that had alzheimers. We would often suggest to families to try and record as much of their loved ones as they could, before memories fade. And sometimes it was a good therapy for the person with Alzheimers. Watching a video of themselves talking about something on a TV might bring them back to that memory or moment talking to the person filming.

                      Maybe something helpful here:

Although there's no cure for Alzheimer's disease, certain drugs might help you manage your symptoms and improve your life for a time.

Get information and resources for Alzheimer's and other dementias from the Alzheimer's Association.

                      hope it helps.

Just realized I missed Speedbag IV. Great tribute and punch drumming Zaz!

You are definitely a punch drummer! Love the multi-elbow combos, rear strait punches and fist rolls! I'll have to go back and watch it some more to pick up everything you threw in!

Cheers to the rest of the forum and Speedbag IV baggers. I hope to make it again sometime and I'll be looking for some vids from the event. Wish I would have seen the preview of the Art of the Bag Zaz!

                        Keep on Punch drumming!
