    backhand hit

I don't do all the fancy moves like most do on this forum, but mainly stick to the "boxer" hits with some different combos.

One of the standard workouts I do and is done by many, is to hit the bag with the knuckles facing up with front of fist and then roll that same hand and hit the bag with the side of the hand. Then the other hand does it, etc.

Today I tried front fist, roll that same hand 180 degrees and then hit it back hand. Fortunately, I wear gloves.

Anyway, I found it an interesting way of hitting to work different muscles.

Has anyone tried it? Can I claim a whole new hit pattern and name it after me?

    I hit backhand on occasion.

The Bible mentions backhand , specifically in the context of a spinning backfist, but otherwise it's not featured much in bible style hitting.

This gentleman's video contains a fair amount of backhand hits, if memory serves. He's a martial arts specialist.

(In case anyone is wondering the 2hr bible DVD and complete DVD series are much more complete than the 21 combinations video above). I generally recommend people pick up Alan's DVD.

Used to be able to do elbow strikes before the shoulder injury but I will leave well enough alone now and just be thankful I can still do hand strikes. His slow motion though does make things clear in his film and he gives good explanations.

For instance, his hand roll explanation is tough to beat. Although I never seen or heard Speedbag's explanation of it, just trying the film's explanation on the Turbo bag just now, I immediately was able to do the hand roll on it. I like where he said give 80% focus on the hands and the other on the bag. Details like that come in handy.

Regarding hand strikes, I see that in Step 16 he is doing exactly what I tried yesterday.

In a real fight I think a back hand punch should only be done if practical and that you are sure it is the knuckles that will hit and NOT the back of your hand. The back of the hand has too many bones that can break easily. Don't ask me how I know that.

You asked. It wasn't from a fight as when I thought I broke my left big knuckle by punching at the face of the guy I was fighting, and just before my punch lands, he tilts his head forward, so I hit his forehead. That ended that fight; him holding his head and me holding my left hand. That is the main reason I wear gloves on the speedbag and double end bag because my left big knuckle is the first thing to hurt. It never was the same ever again.

Regarding the back of the hand, I was having intermittent problems with my motorcycle. So as I was working on it, I was frustrated and in a hurry as I pulled a relief hose from the gas tank. As I did that it snapped loose and the back of my hand hit the carburetor. It stung and I just rubbed it a bit. In the meantime my wife asks me to do another honey-do and it was one too many and asked at the wrong time, so we get in an argument and I just take off riding. When I'm about 30 miles from home, my left hand is getting into some SERIOUS pain. So I head home but each time I pull in the clutch lever with my left hand (which was many times coming back) I about cried from the pain.

When I got home I'm trying to pull off my motorcycle jacket but can't because my hand can't take it. So my wife asks what happened and stupid me in my dumb pride say, "What do you care?" Fortunately, she had more sense and helped me. It was a Sunday so she drove me to the ER since everything else was closed. I broke the back of my hand by just that little bump and that small fracture hurt so bad I couldn't believe it. You can be sure I'll watch the back of my hands from now on.

          I said don't ask.
