The Rawlings Reaper (A Rusty eBay Gamble)

I picked this beast of a bag on eBay.

It was listed in the wrong category, boxing gloves, and described without bladder, so a man cave item or just a collection piece. What a steal! The leather is just beautiful. I have to do a little restoration on the piping around the top. And add some nice brown or tan leather laces.

I call it the reaper because its huge, heavy, and will kill both my arms and my 24" x-mark platform.

Yeah ,it's a little bit amazing that I got two very vintage bags that have mint leather. We've seen an awful lot of garbage being peddled on eBay that is disentergrating as you look at it. Some of it listed for an outrageous amount (although I seriously doubt that they are ever actually sold).

I scored a nice 4200 Olympic edition too, but that is another story for another thread...

And in this corner, 29P, "The Reaper" Rawlings! Fully restored, unlike my faith in humanity.

I'd love to know the approximate year of this bag, and what boxers may have used one. So far, I only found one vintage sporting goods website that described this bag as from the 40's. Hard to believe mine is in such great shape.

They were made of high quality leather, with excellent workmanship. You get lucky sometimes and come across one that has been reasonably taken care of. The A.J.Reach bag that I recently acquired dates from the mid to late 1930's. It used the bladder that had the interior inflation tube that was tucked under the laces. That was pretty much replaced with either the neck placed or bottom valve by the early 1940's. It's pristine, like it was just fresh from the workshop in Philadelphia, other than the bladder was missing. It's not just a wall hanger either, the leather is superior to the "pleather" that a lot of bags are being made with now, not to mention some of the "real leather" ones. It will get used occasionally, but boy it's a big one, makes the Title "big blue" look like a medium size bag.

I was able to find the Rawlings 29P in a Rawlings catalog from 1966.

I'm still trying to find the range of production years. Also, Dutchman notice that wine color 12P right next to it. That is the one we talked about for sale on eBay. I think it is still for sale.

Another Reaper is up for sale on eBay. Its a charity auction, so I hope it sells. Maybe the leather could be restored a bit?
