Has anyone used Century gloves ?

    Hi -

have any of you used Century leather gloves for the speedbag, double end bag, or heavy bag ? I am speaking of the ones pictured below specifically.

I have been hitting everyday and my 4214 Everlast speedbag is hurting my knucles...I put more air in it recently....
I like using wraps but it takes a bit of effort to put them on and take off....

how about these ? they were pretty comfortable in the store and felt better than the Everlast Gel wraps...

    I got 'em!

Hey jag, I have that exact pair of gloves (Big 5 Sporting Goods, $40 or so). They are well-made and extremely comfortable, however, I no longer wear them to hit the speedbag. They are great for working the heavy bag due to the thick padding and steel palm tube, but don't give me an accurate enough feel to work the speedbag. After a few weeks of rigorous speedbag work you will probably no longer feel the need to wear gloves or even handwraps, but that depends on the intensity of your workout, size of the bag, inflation pressure, and your body's ability to build resistence.

I think if all you are doing is the classis boxer's workout then these will be fine, but if you want to try the more difficult techniques and combinations then you will want a glove (or preferably handwrap) with less bulk and smoother edges.

      cool - thanks Billy -

I will probably invest in a softer bag like the Title - but you guessed right - my goal is to get to the speed and combos you have in your videos....

I guess the gloves will be useful for my heavy bag workout in the future...

I just started speedbagging in November, but ive had those century gloves for a while. When I first started, my knuckles were sore too. I used those gloves for a little while but wasnt getting the control of the bag the way I wanted. I then started using wraps. Those gave me alot more control. But like Billy said, after a while you wont need them. I am at the point where I go bare knuckle now and it doesnt hurt after a good workout. I currently use those century gloves for my boxing class and they work fine on a soft heavy bag. But I also have a Everlast 100 pound heavy bag with hard as rock spots. Those gloves dont give me enough protection in my opinion and I am in the process of finding better gloves.

            Gloves

I completely agree with BillyMack. I have the same pair from my old martial arts days. Never liked them on the speed bag.

You will see boxers wrapped and gloved up in video's and fight training montages, but remember they also do a variety of other bag work, such as heavybag, mitts and double end etc. The force of that heavier punching requires more protection.

Although hand protection (particularly wraps for bone support) are always encouraged (and especially for beginners..), Most serious speed baggers I know eventually drop gloves altogether when their hands accomodate to the contact, external seams, leather etc. The barehand just seems to have a better feel for the bag.

I'll second that... I used to use gloves very similar to these... once you go bare handed, gloves feel too bulky.

I've been training lately by rotating between the DE bag, the heavy bag, and the speedbag with using a timer for 3 minute rounds. When I get to the speed bag, I just take off my gloves and hit using wraps. I can't believe that the thin mexican style handwraps make a difference in my hits and it definitely does. I too prefer bare handed after trying to go back to handwraps when I've gone a year or more just barehanded on the speedbag.

actually I do use the handwraps more often than not - sometimes I run downstairs and hit for 5 minutes and don't wrap - with my hands wrapped I can hit harder and get a faster rebound.
I thought gloves would be good for those 5 minute sessions.... I'll stick to wraps though
