    First Week

    Hello

I am new to the speed bag (second week). I am 52 and just bought my first speed bag platform Everlast Adjustable Speed bag Platform and a Title x-small yellow 8x5 speed bag.

I am not sure how much air I have put in the bag but it seems slow compared to the videos I have been watching on UTUBE. Is there a way I can tell by squeezing the bag if I have enough air in the bag?

Any tips on training? I have been working on the 1, 2, 3 punch style.

Welcome to the forum. I started last year, at 55, so I know the feeling.

There could be a few things that are slowing down your bag - platform vibration, the swivel, air pressure in the bag, or the size of the bag. Your bag size is small enough that that shouldn't be a problem. Does your platform vibrate? If so, think about placing a bag of sand on the top of it. This really cuts down on vibration.

As to your question about inflation, there should be some "give" to the bag when you hold the bag and squeeze your thumbs into it. The less air, the slower the bag. But over-inflation is not good either, it could make the bag feel like a rock!

What type of swivel came with your setup? That probably isn't the problem at this point.

Don't go by videos on YouTube. Some of those guys (and girls) have many years of practice in under the board, and it shows. Many of them are members of this forum. Master the techniques, and speed will come with practice.

A bit of advice. Look at Alan Kahn's site (www.speedbagcentral.com). There is great info there. Also, consider purchasing his book, The Speed bag Bible and DVDs. It's a wealth of information.

Also, check the Gold Mine section of this forum for more great info. Everyone on this forum is very helpful. I think you'll find you'll learn quite a bit in a short time. Good luck.

platform vibration - I noticed that first thing as it vibrated the entire house so I placed a 25 lb olympic plate on top and that fixed that.

The Swivel came with the Everlast Plateform

If I add air will it make the bag go out of round?

      I will check out speedbagcentral!

      Thanks

Has the vibration stopped since you added the plate? That is a chain link swivel and shouldn't account for slowness. If you add too much air, you could blow out the bladder or weaken the valve. Use the squeeze test.

Good luck and keep us posted on your progress.

make sure the plate is attached to your board it some way or that will come crashing down eventually. we like using sand because its heavy and will absorb the vibration rather than rattle itself. so think about sand if u have no way of attaching the plate.

The better you get at the speed bag, the faster it will go. Don't expect to stand under the bag after a week and watch it move like Alan or Skunk does. I also think it looks faster when you watch yourself on video.

              Hi all!
First of all, what a great forum!
I'm new at this as well. I got my bag for Christmas, but I had to take it down because of the "severe" sound I created for my dear neighbor. She sad it was like living inside basdrum (-:

I have now install it inside my parking space, but now I face another problem. The winter (Sweden). Not only the temperature but also the darkness.

Well, I just wanted to say hello and I'll be back fit for training in May.

              Cheers,
              Biggen

My bag got a lot quieter after I placed the 25 lb. Olympic weight on it.

You can see my 2 week progress at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=50YDk...e=channel_page

I look forward to each morning just to workout on the speed bag!

I just started myself about a month ago so i can relate to how you're feeling. I also have a vibration problem as my stand is attached to a pre-wall frame, I am planning on getting a sand bag to put on top to hopefully eliminate the vibration. Good luck with your bagging! I'll be alongside you doing just the same.

I also find I can hit a lot faster in my head than I can on the bag. I often punch drum in my head to a new song I hear, than go try it on the bag and go, "whoaaa....that's faster than I thought". It's amazing how fast I think I go in my head, and then the bag brings me back to reality.

                      Hey Biggen,

There must be a lot of Baggers in Sweden. I hear from folks in Sweden almost every month and I have sent several books and DVD's over there. Must be something about the weather.

I started speed bagging about 2 months ago and have already confessed to this group that I am hooked. I'm a 48 year young female and probably the only one that uses the bag regularly at the fitness place where I work out.

I can tell you that getting the Speed Bag Bible was a great investment and then watching the YouTube videos helped me see some major things I was doing wrong (like using too much of a swing). When I started focusing on precise hitting and consistent punch strength all of sudden my speed picked up!

I now do 3 speed bag routines mixed into the rest of my fitness routine. I never would have guessed I'd have so much fun with that stupid bag.

Anyhow I wrote all that to say after you take care of any obvious excess vibration issues, just focus on figuring out what rhythm you want to practice, the speed will come naturally.

Looking great 52beginner, you've got what we call the FCP (Front Circle Punch) down (and the triplet rythm). Time to mix in some FSP (Front Straight Punch)... see this demo for details.

When you can do that you can do the Basic Rhythm.

Thanks everyone for all the help and pointers. Watching all the videos helps but you all make it look so easy.

I have to admit it I am hooked as well so I am off to spend some time with my new friend Mr. Speed Bag! LOL!

Does the "S" Hook Swivel help? I have a few people pointing me in that direction.

                              beginner also

I am 56 years old and just put up a wall mount everlast bag today. I have been reading over some of the posts which mention speedbag size and I have no idea what I have and will have to look. I know it says to inflate to 4lbs. ! I am so excited to get started and am reading all the tips I can on getting started. I want to get back into shape without the heavy lifting, etc. of my younger years. I can feel it in my arms and shoulders after my first 20 minute or so try today. I can't wait to get half way decent at this and welcome any help you can give. thanks
