    Standing punching bag.

I'm new to boxing and fell in love with the speed bag. However, it is difficult for me to have a wall mount. Can I please get some advice on using a standing reflex bag? Thanks.

I'm sure speedbag will comment soon, he's been talking about those things, I think he calls them cobra bags and he really likes them.

        Hi Ub008.

The reflex bag is a lot like a speed bag attached to the floor. Instead of "Rebounds" off the board, you have "recoils" of the spring. When you hit it, the bag will go away from you, then recoil back toward you, then away from you. Kind of like three rebounds. Then when it comes back toward you, you hit it again. Or, like some techniques on the speed bag, you can hit it again after one recoil instead of three. You can also do Front Double Punches, Fist Rolling and the elbow strikes if the bag is high enough.

One main difference might be stance. For the speed bag, you normally stand with your feet parallel, facing front. This brings both fists to you chin with the same distance to the bag for fast repetitive punching. For the reflex bag, this stance isn't really necessary and most people adopt the more standard "fight" stance, one leg forward. You can also do footwork, moving clockwise or counter clockwise around the bag as you punch.

I like using it for light timing punches. It is not for power punching.

I used it a lot for shoulder rehab, and taped some of that, but it was really pushing the bag to provide a little tension against the arm. I haven't taped any "regular" workouts. They only last a few minutes anyway. I practice some FDP, F-Roll and Outward and Inward Elbows to feel the timing. Nothing to exciting to see.

Thanks for the information. I will use it to determine if I should purchase the reflex bag.

We'll be the judge of that, thank you very much! Just kidding, but I would like to see some footage of someone hitting one of those. It's hard to tell what kind of action those produce...

If anyone else has one can you post up some video?

Super, thanks for the link. It was the first time I saw someone using the reflex bag. Looks cool.

I don't know what I was expecting, but you're right, I don't see the advantage that this bag has over a double end bag, except maybe that the DE bag is a little more unpredictable because of it's design, but for boxing training, unpredictability is a good thing.

Yeah. I want a speedbag and a heavy bag for my garage , but I might have to add one of these too. That guy knew how to hit the thing too.

I use mine pretty regularly, since it's on my back porch next to the "grill" that I use a couple of nights a week. It keeps me occupied while the cows are cooking. I practice Front Fist Rolling (F-Roll), Front Double Punching (FDP), Outward Elbow strikes (single, double & Triples), Hook Punches, jabs, straight punch and some basic kicks like round kick, crescents and hook kick. The one I have adjusts up and down really quick and easy. It's fun to use. Keeps the shoulders loose.
