Thanks man! The bible is on its way so I can figure out how to put different combinations together. Really lovin' S.U.N. by the way, seems there are a lot of musicians around here.

My apologies. I hope I did not offend. I'm not up on all of the correct terminology yet.

Great information as always. I've hit up your site the last couple of weeks and enjoy the way you lay things out in text and especially video. Thank you very much.

I was taught by a former Marine Corps champion boxer, and he just called it hitting the speed bag. But for those that wonder about the possible differences in "speed bag styles" I will offer an educated guess.

            Speed Bag "Bible" Style:

Stance: Feet Parallel, shoulders square facing bag. Elbows held up and out from body, making upper arm close to parallel to floor to allow staighter movement of fists through the bag. Both fists usually remain the same distance from the bag during the activity. When punching, normally maintains this position. The ribs are normall open and unprotected for the speed bag doesn't punch back.

Bag Position: Optimal is belly of the bag at your mouth. This allows the fists to pass through the bag and move to a different position easier.

Contact Surfaces: Using both fists and elbows to hit the bag.

Bag Contact: hitting the bag from "all around", meaning four general areas.

Rhythm, or Bag Beat: Understanding and using the Rules of Rhythym when hitting from all around the bag. The number of rebound required between techniques are constantly changing from 1,2 or 3, depending on the direction of the next strike.

Purpose: Obvious physical exercise benefits and the above allows for extensive creative expression of rhythm, sound and customization of personal workout.

Person: Used by persons of all shapes, sizes, colors, professions. Very popular among drummers, secretaries, teachers and laundromat workers. Also used by several computer specialists, Truck Drivers, Indie Film producers, PH.D mathmaticians, house wives, Neurosurgeons and Physicians of all types, TV and radio personalities, Welders, carpenters, painters, Barbers, American Indian Pow Wow Dancers, Martial Artists, Musicians, video store sales personnel, rodeo clowns, circus clowns and popsicle truck drivers to name a few. I've also known a few bible style lawyers too hit the bag.

            Boxer Style:

Stance: Feet can be Parallel with shoulders square facing bag or assuming their basic boxing stance to emphasize ring techniques and movement. In a boxer stance the distance of each fist to the bag is different. Key to boxing position is maintaining lower elbows to emphasize protection of ribs in the ring. When punching they may maintain a steady standing position or move around the bag to emphasize footwork.

Bag Position: Usually like a higher bag position, with the belly above eye level or at the forehead. This allows boxer to maintain a high hands position and "keep their arms up".

Contact Surfaces: Emphasizes fist contacts only for elbows are not allowed in boxing.

Bag Contact: hitting the bag from the front with the fists, although sometimes the sides are used if a hook punch is thrown.

Rhythm, or Bag Beat: Typically they stay in the Triplet, or 3-count rhythm, normally used when punching from the same side (front) repetitively. This may change when using a Hook Punch, entering from the side of the bag.

Purpose: Obvious physical exercise benefits and the above allows for extensive training of punching skills, stance and movements required in the boxing ring.

Person: Basically, Boxers and those that train them. Also by people who have only seen boxers use a speed bag and just assume that is "the way it is supposed to be used". One of the greatest moments in sports is the look on these people's face the first time they see a "Bible Styler" cut loose.

( note to self: The Speed Bag does not define how it is to be used. The user defines how they will use the speed bag.)

I am sure there a some other differences, but these are the main ones that I can think of. Neither way is wrong or right, for they both allow you to enjoy the rhythmic movements and sound of the bag. But as for me an my house, we shall follow the * Bible. (* OK, I'll admit a personal bias on that one... , but I've known the author for a long time.)

You should see it in full HD...awesome! Thanks Nova, you are a big inspiration and one hell of a hitter. I've been watching your videos to learn from, you've been a big help (thanks). I JUST got the bible today and now it's time for some homework.

I'll do the best I can with future videos (it's hard to shoot creatively & hit at the same time)...hopfully I can cover my lack of baggin' talent with cinemagraphic pizzazz.

There is usually not too much action on these boards in the Summer, other than the updates from the speed bag gathering. Come Fall, it becomes more active around here. Just seems to be how things have developed over the years.
