    Age Identification Help Wanted

    Hello all,

I am new to this group and was looking for some help identifying some old A.G. Spalding & Bros. leather speed bags. They were "Made in England". Any hints on age, by what company in England made them, etc would be greatly appreciated. Thank you .

Hello Working class dandy, and welcome to the forum.

Watch for a dead on reply from Dutchman or Paranday on that. Nobody has stumped their historical band of knowledge yet....

but I long for those days. That is one solid looking non-welted bag!.

I'll have to defer to Dutchman for the age of this Spalding bag.
Below is a 1913 catalog page from an Australian sporting goods supplier,
you can see the bag is clearly marked
AG Spalding & Bros, makers, London.
It would seem Spalding had a factory in England.

That's one really nice bag. As far as age, well Spaulding was purchased by an English company in 1938, and sold in the 1960's, so that gives us a window of about 25 to thirty years. This bag has a bottom valve, something that didn't come into common use here until the very late 1930's early 1940's. It's more than likely this is a product of the late 1940's tho.

Wonder what the earlier connection Spalding had with London was then? "Makers" indicates they had more than a warehouse and sales unit there.

It appears that Spalding entered the tennis and golf market in Great Britain by opening manufacturing facilities in London and Endinburgh in 1900. From this point the firm started making their complete line of sporting goods for the British market.

For what it's worth, the platform in the above add is (or at least until recently) on ebay. I think the BIK price was $450, but, it's been sitting a while.
