Do you blink alot when bagging?

My dad had me in martial arts at a very young age and one of my sensei's was fanatical about students not blinking while he punched FSP's at our little faces at a rapid speed just stopping short of hitting us. Finally! This ridiculous scary thing I had to live through has paid off as I don't seem to blink when hitting the speed bag any more than I normally would when doing normal things.

However, if I start thinking about blinking while the bag is rapidly flying back at my face I will without a doubt start to blink a little more..

Note: This could be the stupidest thread ever. Apologies

Agreed! I don't even look at the bag when I hit, I focus on the swivel.
Never had a blinking problem....damn, Speedy Tommy T wears a blindfold when he hits!

I focus on the swivel too. Hell, with my Arc swivels, its difficult NOT to stare at the swivel.

I'm hearing nothing but great things about your swivels...as soon as you can make me a "Plum Crazy Purple" (like a 1969 Plymouth Road Runner) one, you can count on my order!

I would do it if I could source the plastic.

If you think about blinking even when you are not bagging you start blinking more than you normally do.

I know that what you’re talking about is the reflex to close your eyes hitting or getting hit. It’s common in beginners, and comes from being nervous. It’s normal.

You’ve already started by being aware of it. It’ll take some time, and what works for one person doesn’t always work for another. Steven Brock mentioned squinting. It may work for him, but I’ve found that it doesn’t work for most of my students. What I tell them to do is to try several things. Firstly, which you’ve done, is be aware of it. Then to concentrate on trying to see the action as you hit. This helps some people, as with that they stop the “blink”.

For some other people, it’s simply the fear of getting hit as they do this. And that is what they have to overcome. There’s no magic formula in this case. Just practice more and be aware of it and try not to do it. It will eventually come. It’s hard, but it’ll happen! In this case, it’s mostly a matter of confidence in your abilities and overcoming the fear of being hit in sparring. While the subconscious fear may never disappear (and probably shouldn’t), you will learn to control it in these situations.
