    Cost of platform

    Hi,

I visited a local wood merchants today. He has quoted me a price of £300 UK sterling to make me a custom platform made of maple wood. 30 inch diameter and 4 inches thick. Polished to a shiny finish. Does this sound a reasonable price for his labour and the wood? I have given him a £20 deposit.

    Any help much appreciated.

    Thanks folks

what type of wood? how will it be constructed?4 inches thich sounds like it will be a butcher block of sorts unless laminated or a solid piece. I built one from Ipe and the material costs would have been extremely expensive if I had to purchase it. Good luck and have fun!

This sounds like furniture grade or better work. Probably not butcher block, but joined, doweled or tongue in groove I'd bet. The Five bill price tag would be about right for that.

The price seems reasonable, and if you don't have access to machine tools to make it yourself, there is little choice. That platform is as forever as can be, you won't have any regrets owning it. Will make punching a pleasure.

Thanks for the response folks. I'm picking it up at the weekend. Managed to get him to reduce the price by £50 too! I will post pictures here once it is up and running.

              Regards

That's for the drum alone...right? What about the rest of it? What are you going to hang it on. I imagine it will be heavy and will need strong supports. Can't wait to see what you come up with.

My homemade platform cost all of $20.00 to build and I'm pretty sure it will be around for many years. I still use it daily.

                      Dream on.
Don't buy your speed bag from the same place you buy your tackle box.
