What is the wood behind the mounting brackets for?

One quick question. I see that people have 3 pieces of wood behind the mounting bracket of their speedbag. What is the benefit of doing that? Does it decrease the amount of sound? Or is it for more stability? Or possibly somehow creates less vibration? Also what type of wood should I use on the top of the drum to decrease vibration?

    to me

it creates a little more distance between you and the wall, and maybe a little bit mor stabllity or maybe just an easyer way not to measure out were the holes have to be lol. and i suggest you go to lowes and the have pre cut slates of wood that work GREAT or do as i did and cut a office desk in half and use that!! works great
